Chapter 5 - The Awakening and the Revelation

Forty-five minutes later, Dr. Vance packed his stethoscope back into his leather bag, wiping his forehead with a handkerchief.

"She’s suffering from severe bronchial congestion, acute exhaustion, and stage-four hypothermia," Dr. Vance said, speaking in a low, professional tone so as not to disturb the sleeping child. "We caught her just in time, Robert. Another two hours out in that rain, and her organs would have begun to shut down. I've administered a strong antibiotic drip and an intravenous saline solution with vitamins. She needs absolute rest for the next forty-eight hours."

"Will she recover fully?" Robert asked, standing rigidly beside the bed, his hands clenched into fists in his pockets.

"Physically, yes children are remarkably resilient once the immediate crisis passes. But emotionally and nutritionally, she has suffered a prolonged trauma. You need to find out who was responsible for her care."

"I already have," Robert said coldly. "Thomas is running background checks on every address associated with Rose Vance over the last decade."

Vance paused, looking sharply at his longtime friend and client. "Vance? As in..."

"Clara's mother."

The doctor fell silent, giving Robert a solemn nod before packing his bag and heading toward the door, escorted by Mrs. Higgins.

Robert pulled a velvet armchair close to the bedside. He sat down, staring at Anna’s face. In sleep, the lines of pain relaxed, revealing a striking, heartbreaking resemblance to the woman he had loved and lost.

Why didn't she come to me? the thought burned in his mind. Why hide from me for ten years? Did she hate me that much?

At around two in the morning, Anna stirred.

Her eyelids fluttered open, revealing dark, luminous eyes that blinked against the soft lamplight of the massive bedroom. She stared at the high vaulted ceiling, then at the crystal chandelier, before turning her head slowly toward the man sitting beside her.

For a moment, confusion clouded her gaze. Then recognition flickered.

"You... you're the man from the car," she whispered, her voice raspy.

"I am," Robert said softly, leaning forward so she wouldn't have to strain. He poured a cup of warm water from the bedside pitcher and held a straw to her lips. "Take a small sip, easy now."

Anna drank obediently. The water seemed to revive her slightly. She looked around the opulent room again, her eyes wide with awe and lingering fear.

"Is this heaven?" she asked innocently.

Robert felt a sharp pang in his chest. He managed a gentle, sad smile. "No, Anna. It's just my house. You're safe here. No one is going to hurt you."

Anna gripped the edge of the silk blanket with thin fingers. "Grandma Rose... where is Grandma? I left her. I was supposed to get the medicine, but the guard... he wouldn't let me in..." Her lower lip began to tremble, and a tear spilled over her lashes. "She's sick, mister. She hasn't eaten in two days. She keeps coughing blood."

Robert’s blood ran cold.

"Where is she, Anna?" Robert asked, his voice steadying, though his hands shook slightly. "Tell me where you live."
