With the company restructured under compassionate leadership, Ethan turned his full attention to the legal battle for the children.
Child Protective Services had initially placed Lily and Emma into temporary state custody, but Ethan hired the best family law advocates in the country to fight for full legal guardianship and adoption.
During the custody hearing, the state judge looked over Ethan's background, acknowledging his past loss and his recent actions.
"Mr. Cole," the judge said, looking over her glasses. "You are a wealthy man with an enormous corporate responsibility. Raising two young children—one with complex ongoing medical needs—is a profound commitment. Why are you doing this?"
Ethan stood up before the court, looking at Lily and little Emma, who was now healthy enough to sit quietly in a stroller beside the defense desk.
"Your Honor, for six years, I lived in a shadow," Ethan spoke from his heart. "I thought my life ended the day I lost my daughter. But when Lily walked into that hospital holding her sister, she brought me back to life. I don't just want to provide for them; I need them as much as they need me. I promise to devote the rest of my life to being the father they deserve."
