Chapter 6 - A Promise Built on Glass

The blizzard cleared by morning, leaving Chicago blanketed in a blinding, beautiful white. The power returned, but Ryan didn't leave.

Over the next two weeks, the shift in our dynamic was undeniable. The wall between us had shattered, replaced by a deep, mature intimacy built on forgiveness and understanding. Ryan moved his work from his downtown office to my apartment, taking phone calls in the kitchen while I rested in the living room.

He catered to my every need. He rubbed my aching lower back with warm oil, rubbed my swollen feet, and took care of every chore without being asked. He was no longer the detached, terrified man who had let me walk away; he was a man who had stepped fully into his power as a partner and a father.

One evening, after Emma had gone to sleep in the guest room, Ryan invited me out onto the balcony. He had cleared the snow off the chairs and set up two heating lamps, surrounding the space with glowing fairy lights.

“What is all this?” I laughed, wrapping my heavy cardigan tighter around my body.

“A moment for us,” Ryan smiled, pulling out a chair for me.

We sat together looking out over the glittering Chicago skyline. The air was crisp, but the heat lamps kept us cozy. Ryan reached across the small table and took my hand in his.

“Madison, these past few weeks have been the happiest days of my life,” he said quietly, his eyes glowing in the candlelight. “Watching you carry our baby, seeing how loving you are with Emma... it healed parts of me I didn't think could ever be repaired.”

“Ryan...” My heart fluttered wildly.

“I know we have work to do,” he continued, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, velvet box.

My breath hitched.

He didn't open the box right away. Instead, he held it in the palm of his hand.

“This isn't a proposal,” Ryan explained gently, holding my gaze. “I’m not going to rush you into marriage just because we’re having a baby, or because I owe you time. You deserve a real courtship. You deserve to be cherished.”

He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a simple, elegant platinum band set with a single, brilliant emerald—my birthstone.

“This is a promise ring,” Ryan said softly, taking the ring out and slipping it gently onto the ring finger of my right hand. “It’s my promise to you that I am committed to this family. To you, to Emma, and to our little girl. I will spend every day earning your heart back until you’re ready for a different ring on your left hand.”

Tears blurred my vision as I stared at the green gem glittering under the fairy lights. I pulled my hand away only to wrap both arms around his neck, pulling him into a deep, passionate kiss—the first true kiss we had shared in eight long months.

When we pulled apart, Ryan’s eyes were wide with pure joy.

“Does this mean I’m doing okay?” he teased gently, wiping a tear from my cheek.

“You’re doing wonderfully, Mr. Carter,” I smiled, resting my forehead against his. “Just keep it up.”
