Chapter 2 - Midnight Whispers in Room 408

The fluorescent lights of the pediatric wing were dimmed to a soft, amber glow. Outside, Chicago’s winter wind rattled the glass panes of St. Mary’s Medical Center, casting eerie shadows across the polished floor. I stood outside Room 408 for several long seconds, my hand hovering above the cool steel handle. My heart hammered against my ribs, echoing the quiet rhythm of the baby kicking beneath my palm.

I took a deep, steadying breath, pushing aside the woman who was still deeply wounded by Ryan Carter, and stepping into the shoes of Dr. Madison Hayes.

Inside, seven-year-old Emma was propped up against a mountain of white hospital pillows. Her small wrist was neatly cast in bright pink fiberglass. Beside her bed, Ryan sat in a low vinyl armchair. He had shed his suit jacket, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to reveal his forearms. He looked exhausted, haunted, and completely out of his depth.

When the door clicked shut, Ryan snapped his head up. The desperation in his eyes was almost unbearable to look at.

“Dr. Madison!” Emma’s face instantly lit up, her weary brown eyes sparkling. “You came!”

I forced a gentle, reassuring smile and walked over to the side of her bed, deliberately keeping my distance from Ryan. “Of course I came, sweetheart. I heard my favorite patient was having trouble sleeping.”

“My arm doesn't hurt much anymore,” Emma whispered, clutching a stuffed brown bear with her good hand. “But the hospital is loud. And Daddy looks like he’s gonna cry, so I can’t sleep.”

A bittersweet knot pulled tight in my chest. I glanced at Ryan. He lowered his gaze, rubbing a hand over his face to hide the raw emotion breaking through his carefully constructed exterior.

“Daddys get scared too when their brave girls get hurt,” I told Emma softy, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “But you’re safe here. And tomorrow morning, you get to go home.”

“Are you staying?” Emma asked, her voice growing thick with sleepiness. “Can you stay until I fall asleep?”

I felt Ryan’s gaze burning into the side of my face. I knew I should leave—I knew that being near him threatened the fragile emotional fortress I had spent six painful months building. But looking into Emma’s hopeful, innocent face, I couldn't say no.

“I’ll stay for a few minutes,” I whispered.

I sat down on the edge of the mattress, adjusting my weight carefully to accommodate my heavy bump. Emma leaned her small head against my hip, taking comfort in my presence. Within ten minutes, her rhythmic, deep breathing filled the room. She was fast asleep.

Silence stretched between Ryan and me, heavy and suffocating.

“You’re incredible with her,” Ryan murmured softly, his voice raspy from unshed tears. “You always were.”

“She’s a sweet girl, Ryan,” I replied, keeping my voice low and professional as I slowly stood up. “She takes after her mother.”

Ryan winced as if I had struck him. His ex-wife had abandoned him and Emma four years ago, leaving Ryan to navigate fatherhood alone—a trauma that had turned him into a man terrified of commitment, terrified of being left, and ironically, a man who pushed people away before they could push him.

“Madison, please,” Ryan begged quietly, standing up from his chair. He stepped around the bed, keeping a respectful distance, but his posture was entirely bowed in defeat. “Look at me. Please.”

I turned to face him, crossing my arms over my chest. “I’m looking, Ryan.”

“Is it mine?” His voice cracked on the last word. His dark eyes searched my face, searching for a sign, a denial, anything to ground him. “Seven months... Madison, the timeline... the night before you packed your bags...”

“Does it matter?” I asked coldly, though tears burned behind my eyelids. “You made your choice six months ago. You told me you couldn't give me a future. You let me walk out of your apartment without a single word to stop me.”

“I was terrified!” Ryan took a step closer, his hands shaking. “I was terrified of breaking your heart the way my ex broke mine! I thought I was protecting you from my mess! But the second you walked out that door, I realized I made the biggest mistake of my life. I came to your apartment three days later, Madison. You were gone. You transferred hospitals, changed your number—”

“Because staying here, loving you while you kept one foot out the door, was killing me!” I hissed, keeping my voice down to avoid waking Emma. “I couldn't stay and watch you pull away every time things got real!”

“I know,” Ryan whispered, tears finally overflowing and tracing down his hollow cheeks. “I know I ruined us. I know I was a coward. But please... answer me. Is that our child?”

I looked down at my rounded stomach, feeling the tiny, miraculous kick against my spine. I looked back up into the eyes of the only man I had ever truly loved.

May you like

“Yes, Ryan,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “She’s yours. We’re having a girl.”

Ryan stumbled back half a step, gasping as if the air had been sucked out of his lungs. He covered his mouth with both hands, his body trembling violently as the magnitude of my words hit him. He fell back into the chair, buried his face in his hands, and wept silently in the dim hospital room.
