Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Digital Trail

Inside the secure operations annex of Salt Lake City International Airport, David Carter sat across a stainless-steel conference table from FAA Senior Inspector Arthur Vance himself—who had flown in via a priority transport jet as soon as the diversion alert had been triggered.
Before them sat an open laptop displaying real-time database logs retrieved directly from AsterJet’s corporate servers in Chicago.
“Mr. Carter, I want to apologize on behalf of civil aviation,” Arthur Vance said, his voice heavy with professional outrage. “When I signed that emergency protocol, I expected every airline employee from gate agents to senior management to honor it without hesitation.”
“They didn't just ignore it,” David replied calmly, placing a portable encrypted flash drive beside the laptop. “Look at what AsterJet’s corporate IT team attempted to do five minutes after we landed.”
Arthur tapped the screen, bringing up the server modification logs. “Good grief. They’re altering the crew manifest. They’re attempting to erase Susan Reynolds from Flight 417 entirely, claiming she was a non-working passenger.”
“They think they can bury it under bureaucratic red tape,” David said, a faint, confident smile touching the corner of his mouth. “What they don't realize is that every single interaction on this flight was logged by the VTX-7 smart-pouch I carry. It doesn't just monitor temperature; it records ambient audio, spatial coordinates, and real-time security handshakes with the airline's digital check-in registry.”
David plugged the flash drive into the laptop. A high-resolution audio waveform instantly filled the screen, followed by crystal-clear video and audio playback captured directly from the forward galley during Susan Reynolds’ confrontation.
“I disposed of an unauthorized liquid,” Susan’s voice echoed clearly from the laptop speakers inside the quiet airport office. “You were given an opportunity to cooperate.”

Arthur Vance stared at the screen, watching the exact moment the vial hit the trash compactor. “This isn't just an administrative violation anymore. This is active obstruction of justice and corporate tampering with federal evidence.”
“And Marcus Vance in Chicago is orchestrating the entire cover-up,” David added smoothly. “Shall we pay him a visit?”
