Chapter 6 - Counterplay

The rain poured down in heavy sheets, blurring the city lights as I drove my SUV through the deserted industrial district near the harbor. The micro-cassette tape rested on the passenger seat beside me, glowing faintly under the dash lights. My mind was racing, throwing away fear and replacing it with pure, focused determination.
I was an ordinary father, an software engineer—not an action hero. I couldn't beat three armed men in a physical fight. If I walked onto Pier 42 like a hero in a movie, Vance would kill me, take the tape, and eliminate Sarah without a second thought.
I had to play the game on my terms.
Before heading to the docks, I made two critical calls. The first was to Detective Miller, a high-ranking officer at the local precinct whose contact details I pulled from an old family friend in law enforcement. I explained everything—the forged documents, the physical threats, the illegal debt ring, and the exact coordinates of Pier 42.
"We need proof before we roll heavy tactical units into a private dock, David," Detective Miller had warned me over the phone. "If we show up blind, they'll pull back into the shadows and you'll never see your wife again."
"I'll give you the proof," I told him. "Just have your team ready to move the moment I send the signal."
My second call was to the hospital. A nurse confirmed that Lily and Tommy were stable, hydrated, and sleeping under police guard in the pediatric wing. Hearing that my children were safe gave me a cold, unwavering clarity.
I pulled into the shadow of an abandoned brick warehouse two blocks away from Pier 42. Stepping out into the rain, I opened my laptop on the trunk of the car. Using my portable Wi-Fi hotspot and audio engineering software I used for work presentations, I quickly digitalized the contents of the micro-cassette tape, converting the analog recording into a clear, high-definition digital audio file.
I pressed play to review it.
Vance’s voice blasted through my headphones, crisp and incriminating:
“...If we report Sarah’s father’s actual assets to the board, they’ll liquidate everything and take 100%. But if we hold the debt off the books and force Sarah to pay us directly, we split six million dollars three ways. The board never needs to know...”
It was a full confession of extortion, fraud, and corporate embezzlement.
I uploaded the file to a secure cloud server, set an automated delay script to email the link directly to Detective Miller, the state prosecutor, and the principal board members of Vance’s equity firm in fifteen minutes—unless I manually entered a cancel code from my phone.
If Vance killed me, his entire life, career, and freedom would be destroyed automatically within a quarter of an hour.
I placed the physical micro-cassette into my inner jacket pocket, picked up my phone, and began walking toward the fog-drenched silhouette of Pier 42.
The pier stretched out into the dark, churning waters of the bay. Rusting cargo containers were stacked high along the wooden boardwalk, creating a maze of narrow, shadowed corridors.
"Vance!" I shouted into the wind, my voice echoing off the corrugated metal of the containers. "I'm here!"
From behind a stack of rusted shipping crates, a single flashlight clicked on, illuminating the path forward.

"Walk forward slowly," Vance's voice rang out from the darkness ahead. "Hands where I can see them."
I stepped into the light, my heart pounding against my ribs, but my gaze held steady. It was time to end this.
