Chapter 4 - The Hidden Chamber

The garage was cold, smelling of lawnmowers, motor oil, and damp winter air. Vance followed closely behind me, his right hand resting casually inside his heavy coat—a silent reminder that he was armed. Two more men in dark suits stood guard near the closed garage door, their arms crossed, blocking any possible exit.

"Where?" Vance asked quietly.

I walked toward the far back wall, where I had installed custom floor-to-ceiling wooden shelving units three years ago, right after we moved in. It was a weekend project I had worked on proudly, spending hours precision-cutting the cedar planks. Sarah had insisted on helping me seal the back panels, claiming she wanted to learn woodworking.

Now, looking back with horrified clarity, I realized she hadn't been interested in the craft. She had been ensuring there was hollow space behind the frame.

"Behind the third column," I said, reaching for a toolbox on the workbench.

"Keep your hands where I can see them," one of the guards warned, taking a step forward.

"I need a crowbar to pry the backing panel off," I replied, keeping my voice level. "Unless you want to smash it and risk destroying whatever is inside."

Vance gestured for the guard to stand down. "Proceed. Carefully."

I gripped the steel crowbar, wedging the flattened tip into the seam between the cedar plank and the drywall behind the third shelf. With a sharp groan of protesting wood, the panel popped loose, revealing a dark, narrow recess built directly into the frame wall.

Inside lay a heavy, waterproof steel box, secured with a digital keypad lock.

"Bring it out," Vance ordered, his voice betraying a hint of eagerness for the first time.

I reached into the cavity and pulled the box out, setting it heavily on the workbench between us. The LED screen on the lock glowed red, waiting for a six-digit code.

"What's the code?" Vance demanded.

"I don't know," I said honestly. "I didn't even know this box existed until two minutes ago."

Vance’s face darkened. "David, do not play games with me. Your wife said the code was something personal to you. Think."

My mind raced through dates, anniversaries, birthdays. Sarah was meticulous. If she set a code that only I would figure out under pressure, it had to be something rooted in our family, something that carried emotional weight—or perhaps a warning.

Then I remembered Lily’s weak, terrified whisper from earlier: “Daddy… I tried to keep Tommy safe.”

Why had Lily said that specific phrase? Was it just a child's natural instinct, or had Sarah repeatedly drilled those exact words into her head before locking her away?

"Try the date of Lily's birth," I suggested aloud, typing in six digits: 1-0-1-2-1-9.

The lock chimed softly, and a small red light flashed twice. Access Denied.

"You have two more attempts before the drive inside self-encrypts and wipes its contents," Vance said, his calm demeanor slipping into real tension. "Choose carefully."

I stared at the keypad, my chest tightening. If the drive wiped itself, Vance would have no reason to keep Sarah alive—and no reason to leave me or my kids unmolested.

I closed my eyes, recalling the moment I walked through the front door. The silence. Lily crawling on the floor. Tommy’s faint breathing. The locked room at the end of the hall.

Sarah hadn't been trying to ruin us. She had been trapped by her father's past, trying desperately to construct a shield around us while carrying a crushing weight alone. The code wasn't a memory of happiness. It was the date she made her biggest mistake—the date her father died and passed his debt to her.

"0-4-1-5-2-1," I whispered, pressing the keys.

The lock clicked. A green light flashed brightly.

The lid popped open with a heavy air seal hiss.

Inside lay not just a flash drive, but a set of hard copies—bank ledgers, property deeds, and a micro-cassette recorder labeled with a single name: VANCE.

Vance froze, his eyes widening as he looked at the recorder inside the steel box.

"You didn't just come to collect a debt, did you, Vance?" I realized instantly, my eyes locking onto his. "You were using Sarah to steal from your own bosses."
