Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Dark

The next forty-eight hours passed in a surreal, exhausting blur. The local news had picked up the story, and reporters swarmed the perimeter of my quiet suburban street like vultures. Headlines flashed across television screens across the state: Missing Mother Found in Sister's Backyard.

I kept the blinds tightly shut, keeping Alina sheltered in the center of the house away from the prying eyes of the world. Detective Miller had secured a search warrant for Richard Vance’s home and executive offices, but Richard had already vanished into thin air the moment news broke that the garden was being excavated.

On the third afternoon, my attorney, David Ross, arrived at the house. He was a long-time family friend with sharp grey eyes and an uncompromising demeanor. He carried a thick leather briefcase and sat down across from me at the kitchen table—the very table where this entire nightmare had resurfaced.

"The forensic report came back this morning, Shayla," David said quietly, placing a folder between us. "The remains belong to Malia. I'm so sorry."

Even though I had known in my heart since the moment the shovel hit cloth, hearing the official confirmation felt like a physical blow to my chest. Tears welled in my eyes, silently tracing paths down my cheeks. "How did he do it, David? How did he pull this off without anyone knowing?"

"The coroner determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma," David explained softly. "Richard kept her hidden elsewhere initially—likely at one of his residential construction sites out in the county. But when the police started re-questioning him six months ago, he panicked. He knew you had buried that wooden box in your garden because he had been tracking your movements. He used your own grief as a dumping ground, intending to tip off an anonymous line later to frame you if he ever came under direct suspicion."

"He is a monster," I whispered, anger suddenly flaring bright and hot through the fog of my sorrow. "He killed her because he was losing the custody battle. She was going to take Alina and move out of state."

"And that is exactly what will convict him," David said firmly. "Mrs. Grisham's footage clearly shows his face, his vehicle, and the precise timeline. The district attorney has already issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of first-degree murder and child endangerment."

Later that evening, after Alina had fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, I walked into Malia’s old bedroom, which I had kept locked since her disappearance. The air inside smelled faintly of lavender perfume and old books.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and picked up a framed photograph from the nightstand. It showed Malia and me at the beach three years ago, laughing as the wind tangled our hair, Alina asleep in a stroller behind us.

"I won't let him win, Malia," I whispered to the empty room, clutching the frame to my chest. "I will protect our girl. I will bring him to justice, no matter what it takes."

As if in response, a soft breeze rustled the curtains at the open window. For the first time in over a year, the heavy, suffocating weight in my chest felt a fraction lighter. The truth was finally out in the open, and the darkness could no longer hide it.
