Chapter 10 - A Garden Reborn

A year after the night the shovel hit the earth in my backyard, the garden looked entirely different.
The dark, overgrown weeds and disturbed soil were completely gone. In their place sat a beautiful, sunlit sanctuary framed by white wooden trellises covered in blooming sweet peas and fragrant lavender. In the center of the yard stood a handcrafted wooden bench next to a small, clear stone fountain that trickled softly in the gentle afternoon breeze.
Beside the fountain, a vibrant bed of yellow sunflowers—Malia’s absolute favorite—stretched proudly toward the afternoon sun.
Mrs. Grisham walked through the open back gate, holding a glass pitcher of freshly squeezed lemonade. "It looks absolutely breathtaking, Shayla," she said, setting the pitcher down on the garden table.
"Thank you, Mrs. Grisham," I smiled, putting down my gardening shears. "I couldn't have done it without your help with the soil."
From the house, the sliding glass door swung open, and Alina came running out, her laughter filling the warm air. She was eight now, taller, with a bright, confident smile that lit up every room she entered. She was carrying a framed drawing she had just finished in her bedroom.
"Look, Auntie Shayla! Look what I drew!" she exclaimed, holding up the paper.
It was a vibrant, beautiful picture of three people standing hand-in-hand in a garden filled with yellow sunflowers. On the left was me, in the middle was Alina, and on the right, floating gently above us with bright white wings and a golden smile, was Malia.
At the bottom of the page, in neat, proud handwriting, Alina had written: Our Family Forever.
I knelt down on the soft green grass and wrapped my arms around her, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "It's the most beautiful picture I've ever seen, sweetheart."
"Mommy is happy we fixed her garden," Alina said softly, looking up at the towering sunflowers swaying in the light breeze.

"Yes, she is," I agreed, looking up at the bright blue sky. "She’s right here with us, watching over everything we do."
We sat together on the wooden bench, listening to the soothing sound of the water fountain and the quiet hum of bees among the lavender. The fear, the darkness, and the painful secrets that had once been buried in the dark earth had finally been cleared away, replaced by life, love, and a peace that nothing could ever tear apart again.
