Chapter 7 - A Shadow from the Past

By the time Lily turned one year old, Emily’s life had transformed completely. Hartwell Industries was entering its most profitable year in history, and Emily was widely respected as a titan of industry.

However, desperate men are often dangerous, and Mark Anderson had reached absolute rock bottom.

Having exhausted his money, his career, and his dignity, Mark’s resentment toward Emily had boiled over into a dangerous obsession. He blamed her for his downfall, convincing himself that she had ruined his life out of spite rather than reacting to his own betrayal.

On a chilly autumn evening, Hartwell Industries hosted its annual charity gala at a grand historic estate downtown. The event was packed with politicians, corporate executives, and media personnel. Emily arrived looking stunning in an emerald-green silk gown, holding a sweet, toddler-aged Lily who wore a matching white dress.

Julian, dressed in a sharp tuxedo, stayed close by her side, his watchful eyes constantly scanning the crowd. Though his formal title was still head of security, their relationship had quietly deepened into an unspoken romance over the past few months.

As the evening progressed, Emily gave a moving speech on stage about early childhood education initiatives funded by the Hartwell Foundation. The applause was deafening as she stepped down from the stage, returning to the VIP lounge area where Julian was waiting.

Suddenly, a commotion broke out near the service entrance of the ballroom.

"You can't go in there, sir!" a catering staff member shouted.

A disheveled man burst through the double doors. His clothes were worn and dirty, his eyes bloodshot, his beard overgrown.

It was Mark.

The crowded room went silent as Mark scanned the room frantically, his eyes locking onto Emily. He pulled an object from his coat pocket—a heavy glass bottle filled with clear fluid—and marched aggressively toward her.

"Emily!" Mark screamed, his voice wild and unhinged. "You took everything from me! My job, my reputation, my daughter! You think you can just live like a queen while I rot in the gutter?!"

Guests screamed and scattered, creating a wide berth between Mark and Emily.

Emily stood her ground, pulling Lily behind her instinctively. "Mark, stop right there. You're out of your mind."

"I gave you everything!" Mark yelled, tears of rage streaming down his dirty face. "I gave you years of my life! And you destroyed me! If I can't have my life back, I'm going to make sure you never enjoy yours!"

He unscrewed the cap of the bottle, raising his arm to throw the liquid—which smelled strongly of industrial paint thinner—directly toward Emily's face.

Before Mark could flick his wrist, a swift shadow moved across the floor.

Julian closed the distance in a fraction of a second. With military precision, Julian grabbed Mark’s wrist, twisting it upward and forcing the bottle away from Emily. The bottle fell to the marble floor, shattering harmlessly away from anyone.

Mark let out a howl of pain as Julian swept his legs out from under him, slamming Mark face-down onto the floor and pinning his arms behind his back in one fluid, unstoppable motion.

"Get off me!" Mark shrieked, squirming under Julian's iron grip. "Get off me!"

Julian leaned down, his voice terrifyingly calm right next to Mark's ear. "If you ever come near Emily or Lily again, a prison sentence will be the least of your worries. Do you understand me?"

Within seconds, venue security and municipal police officers stormed the room. They cuffed Mark and dragged him to his feet.

As Mark was pulled away in handcuffs, kicking and screaming obscenities, he looked back at Emily one last time.

Emily didn't look afraid. She didn't look angry. She looked at him with quiet, absolute pity.

"Take him away," the police chief ordered.

As the doors closed behind the police, the ballroom slowly breathed a collective sigh of relief. Julian turned to Emily immediately, his hands gently holding her shoulders, his eyes full of intense concern.

"Are you okay? Did any of it touch you?" Julian asked frantically, examining her face and dress.

"We're fine, Julian," Emily said softly, her breath trembling slightly as the adrenaline faded. "We're completely fine because of you."

Lily looked up from behind Emily's skirt, reaching her tiny hands up toward Julian. "Juli!" the little girl babbled happily.

Julian's harsh expression instantly melted. He dropped to one knee, picking Lily up into his broad arms and pressing a tender kiss to her cheek before pulling Emily into a warm, protective embrace right in front of the entire high-society crowd.
