Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

The following morning dawned gray and rainy. Mark left early without saying a word, leaving behind a coffee cup in the sink and an aura of icy disdain. Emily didn't care. By nine in the morning, a sleek black sedan pulled into her driveway.

Out stepped Mr. Charles Fenton, a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke three-piece suit, alongside Marcus Vance, a sharp-eyed attorney known throughout the city as a bulldog in high-stakes family law.

Emily welcomed them into the living room, serving tea while Lily slept peacefully in her portable bassinet.

"Mrs. Anderson—or rather, Ms. Hart," Marcus Vance began, placing a thick leather briefcase on the coffee table. "Mr. Fenton has briefed me on your situation. Before we proceed, I need to know your ultimate goal."

"I want full custody of my daughter," Emily said without hesitation. "I want Mark out of my life, and I want to ensure he doesn't touch a single penny of my father's legacy."

"That will not be a problem regarding the inheritance," Mr. Fenton chimed in. "Your father's trust was ironclad. Because you were not yet legally awarded the active management during your marriage due to the probate delay, and because the assets were kept entirely separate from marital accounts, Mark has no legal claim to Hartwell Industries."

"However," Vance added, opening his briefcase, "he will certainly try to fight for alimony, a split of this house, and joint custody to leverage financial support from you. To prevent that, we need leverage. We need to know who he is seeing and what he is doing behind your back."

Emily remembered the pink lip gloss and the sweet, heavy floral perfume. "I don't know her name yet, but he’s been working late at his firm, Anderson & Cross. He’s a junior partner there."

"Leave that to us," Vance said with a grim smile. "I have a private investigative team that specializes in corporate infidelity and hidden assets. By tomorrow evening, we will have a complete picture of Mr. Anderson's private life."

For the next two days, Emily played the role of the quiet, obedient wife. She kept her head down, nursed Lily, and endured Mark’s increasing coldness. Mark, convinced he had broken her spirit, grew bolder. He began staying out until two in the morning, barely acknowledging her when he returned.

On Thursday afternoon, Marcus Vance called.

"Ms. Hart, you need to see this," Vance said. "I'm sending a secure file to your tablet now."

Emily opened the document. Attached were crisp, high-resolution photographs taken outside a luxury downtown hotel. Walking hand-in-hand with Mark was a young, sleekly dressed woman with long blonde hair. In one photo, Mark was kissing her on the cheek; in another, he was handing her a velvet box from a high-end jewelry store.

Emily zoomed in on the woman's face. The shock hit her like a physical blow.

It was Chloe Sterling.

Chloe was the head of marketing at Hartwell Industries—a woman Emily’s father had hired personally three years ago.

Emily scrolled down to read the investigator's notes. The report detailed an affair that had been going on for over six months—meaning it had started while Emily was pregnant and while her father was still alive. Even worse, the financial tracking revealed that Mark had been funneling money from his own firm into a private off-shore account, using insider knowledge provided by Chloe about Hartwell Industries' pending contracts.

They weren't just having an affair. Mark and Chloe were conspiring to position Mark’s firm to buyout key assets of Hartwell Industries at a fraction of their worth, believing Emily would be forced to sell off the estate due to financial ignorance.

Emily felt a sudden, freezing calm settle over her. The betrayal was complete, but so was her clarity. Mark didn't just dislike her—he viewed her as a roadblock to his ambition.

She picked up the phone and called Mr. Fenton.

"Chloe Sterling is involved," Emily said calmly.

"What?" Fenton gasped. "The head of marketing? That is a severe breach of fiduciary duty."

"I know," Emily replied. "I want an emergency board meeting called for Monday morning at nine AM. Tell the board members that the sole heir of Richard Hart is stepping down from mourning to take full executive control."

"And Chloe Sterling?"

"Keep her in the dark," Emily said, a cold edge to her voice. "Let her think it's a routine financial review. I want her in that boardroom when I walk in."

"And your husband?" Vance asked over the conference call.

"Mark thinks I'm sitting at home crying," Emily said, looking at the golden badge her father had given her years ago. "Let him think that until Monday morning. He's going to get the surprise of his life."
