Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Giant

While Eleanor recovered, the legal storm Callum had set in motion broke over Arthur Vance with catastrophic force.
Arthur Vance sat in a plush leather chair in his high-rise office in downtown Seattle, his face red with rage as his lead defense lawyer paced in front of him.
"How the hell did this happen?" Arthur barked, slamming his fist on the desk. "Meridian Assets was bought out from under me in forty-eight hours! The board didn't even consult me!"
"Callum Pierce bought eighty percent of the parent company's voting shares directly from European institutional investors," the lawyer explained nervously. "He paid double the market capitalization. Nobody could refuse the offer."
"And the Attorney General?" Arthur demanded. "Where did they get that inspector's report from four years ago?"
"Pierce’s legal team subpoenaed Vanguard's archived internal servers under an emergency federal filing," the lawyer said, holding out a tablet containing a news headline. "Arthur... it's over. The State Prosecutor just filed formal charges of corporate fraud, evidence tampering, and reckless endangerment."
Before Arthur could speak, the double doors of his office opened. Two federal agents stepped inside, flanked by officers from the Seattle Police Department.
"Arthur Vance?" the lead agent asked smoothly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and tax evasion. Put your hands behind your back."
Arthur stood up, his posture stiff, his eyes darting wildly around the room. "Do you know who I am? Do you know my standing in this city?"
"We know exactly who you are," the lead agent said as the handcuffs clicked firmly around Arthur's wrists. "And Mr. Pierce sends his regards."
As Arthur was led through the glass-paneled lobby of his own firm in handcuffs, news cameras caught every second of his humiliation. The story dominated local headlines: Billionaire Callum Pierce Exposes Multi-Million Dollar Corporate Fraud and Vindicates Whistleblower Family.
Callum watched the news broadcast from his study at the estate. He felt no triumph, no gloating satisfaction—only a quiet, profound sense of order restored. A bad man had been stopped, and a good family had been given back their dignity.
Marcus Vance stepped into the study, placing a fresh file on the desk. "Arthur's assets have been frozen. The court has re-opened the wrongful death suit filed by Eleanor Vance against Vanguard Development. Given the suppressed evidence, Vanguard's board has offered a full out-of-court settlement."
"How much?" Callum asked.
"Twenty-five million dollars," Marcus said. "Plus a public apology to Eleanor Vance and her daughters."
Callum nodded slowly. "Ensure the settlement money is placed in a irrevocable private trust for Eleanor, Juny, and Tess. Managed independently, completely tax-shielded."

"And what about your legal expenses, Mr. Pierce?" Marcus asked. "You've spent over six million dollars of your own capital on this over the last two weeks."
Callum closed the file and looked out at the tranquil expanse of Lake Washington. "It's the best investment I've ever made."
