Chapter 10 - The Bench on the Waterfront

One year after the day they first met, the sun was setting over the Seattle waterfront once again. The glass towers caught the late afternoon light, turning the skyline into a blazing wall of rose gold. The bay was calm, reflecting the deep blue of the sky.
A small family walked along the paved promenade. Callum Pierce, dressed comfortably in a simple sweater and dark trousers, held Eleanor's hand. Beside them, seven-year-old Juny and Tess skipped along the path, holding hands, their laughter echoing over the low hum of the city.
They stopped in front of a wooden bench facing the water.
It was the same bench where Callum had found two quiet, frightened little girls sitting side by side beside two worn lavender suitcases a year ago.
The bench was different now. Mounted on the central wooden backrest was a small, polished brass plaque that Callum had commissioned months ago.
Juny knelt down beside the bench and read the words etched into the brass aloud:
"To those who are waiting in the dark: keep counting, keep hoping. You are seen, you are valued, and you are never truly alone."
Tess looked up at Callum, her bright brown eyes filled with trust and affection. "Mr. Callum?"
"Yes, Tess?"
"We don't have to count to ten thousand anymore, right?"
Callum crouched down in front of both girls, taking their small hands in his. "No, sweetie. You never have to count again. You're home."

Eleanor knelt beside them, pulling her daughters into a warm embrace. Callum wrapped his arms around all three of them, standing as a protective shield against the world—a man who had spent his life accumulating wealth, only to discover that his greatest fortune was found on a cold bench by the sea.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long, golden light across the water, the four of them walked away from the bench together, hand in hand, stepping into a bright, secure, and endless future.
