Part 2 – The Woman Outside the Door

The bedroom fell silent.

Even the ticking of the antique clock on the wall seemed to stop.

Clara quickly swept the scattered pearl-headed pins into the opened muslin pouch while pulling the pillowcase back over the evidence. She wasn't trying to hide the truth forever.

She was trying to survive the next thirty seconds.

The doorknob turned again.

This time, the lock clicked.

Victoria stepped inside wearing a silk robe the color of champagne. Her perfectly styled blonde hair rested over one shoulder, and a warm smile appeared on her lips the instant she saw Clara.

"What are you doing in Leo's room?" she asked sweetly.

Clara stood calmly.

"I heard him crying."

Victoria's eyes drifted toward the bed.

For the smallest fraction of a second...

...her smile disappeared.

She had seen the opened seam.

Then it returned as though nothing had happened.

"You really shouldn't interfere," Victoria said. "James is trying to teach Leo discipline. Children manipulate adults if you let them."

Leo buried his face deeper into Clara's side.

His tiny hands shook.

Victoria noticed.

"Oh, sweetheart," she cooed. "You're making poor Mrs. Clara worry again."

Leo didn't answer.

Instead, he whispered so quietly only Clara could hear.

"Don't leave me."

Clara rested one protective hand on his shoulder.

"I won't."

Victoria's expression hardened almost invisibly.

"You've only worked here for two weeks," she said. "I'd hate for tonight to become... a misunderstanding."

"I don't misunderstand frightened children."

For the first time, Victoria's smile completely vanished.

The two women stared at one another across the room.

One had spent years mastering manipulation.

The other had spent decades recognizing it.

Without another word, Victoria walked away.

But before leaving, she looked directly at Leo.

It lasted only a second.

Yet it carried enough hatred to make the boy flinch.

When the door finally closed, Clara hurried to her room, locked it, and emptied the contents of the pillow onto her desk.

Seventy-three pearl-headed pins.

Every one sharpened.

Every one carefully arranged.

Someone hadn't wanted Leo dead.

Someone had wanted him to suffer every single night.

The next morning Clara requested a private meeting with James.

He barely looked up from his laptop.

"If this is about Leo's nightmares—"

"It isn't."

She laid the opened muslin pouch on his desk.

James frowned.

"What is this?"

Without speaking, Clara turned the pillow upside down.

Dozens of pins spilled across the polished mahogany desk.

The metallic sound echoed through the office.

James slowly stood.

His face turned pale.

"What..."

His voice broke.

"What is this?"

"I found them inside your son's pillow."

He stared at the pins as though they belonged to someone else's life.

"That's impossible."

"I thought so too."

James grabbed the pillow.

His fingers traced the resewn seam.

The mismatched thread.

The hidden compartment.

Everything Clara had seen.

His hands began to shake.

"I've put him to sleep on this pillow for months..."

The realization hit him like a train.

Every scream.

Every tear.

Every time Leo begged not to sleep.

James sank into his chair.

"Oh God..."

May you like

His whisper barely escaped his lips.

"What have I done?"
