Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Manor

The iron gates of the Sterling manor were wide open.
Inside the sprawling estate, the atmosphere was chaotic. Rowan Sterling was frantically packing leather duffel bags into the trunk of his luxury sports car, his hands shaking so violently he dropped his keys onto the gravel. His face was flushed, his eyes bloodshot from a mix of alcohol and sheer panic.
"Where is Jaxson?" Rowan yelled toward the open front door. "We need to get to the cabin in Georgia! Now!"
Jaxson Sterling stumbled out onto the porch, holding a bottle of whiskey and a hunting rifle. "They froze the accounts, Rowan! The bank cards are declined! I tried to call Landry, but his phone is disconnected!"
"Landry is gone!" a voice called out from the long driveway.
Rowan spun around. Through the heavy mountain fog, four dark SUVs rolled slowly up the driveway, their headlights cutting through the gray air. They parked in a wide, tactical semicircle, effectively blocking any exit from the property.
The doors opened, and Marcus Vance stepped out, accompanied by Mack and four federal agents. Marcus wore no tactical gear—just his dark civilian jacket—but his presence was commanding, his eyes fixed on the two brothers who had shattered his daughter's body.
"Get off my property!" Rowan screamed, his voice cracking with desperation. He reached into his belt and pulled a heavy, silver-plated handgun. "I’ll kill you, Vance! I swear to God, I’ll kill you!"
Jaxson raised his rifle, his hands shaking as he aimed it toward the federal agents. "We run this town! You can't touch us!"
"Drop the weapons!" Mack shouted, his voice like a clap of thunder. The federal agents instantly drew their weapons, their red laser sights dancing across Rowan and Jaxson’s chests. "Drop them now, or you will not survive this day!"
At that moment, the front door of the manor opened fully, and Miranda Sterling stepped out onto the porch. She looked immaculate, her hair perfectly styled, but her face was pale, her eyes darting between the armed agents and her husband.
"Marcus, stop this!" Miranda yelled, her voice filled with a mixture of anger and panic. "This is my family's home! You have no right to bring these people here!"
Marcus walked forward, ignoring the weapons pointed at him. He stopped ten feet away from the brothers, his hands open at his sides, completely unfazed by the threat of violence.
"Miranda," Marcus said, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtyard. "You stood at that window. You watched your brothers beat our daughter with a tire iron. And then you closed the curtain."
Miranda’s breath hitched. She took a step back, her eyes widening in horror. "I... I didn't see anything. I was asleep. It was dark—"
"We have the video, Miranda," Marcus said softly. "Your niece, Brooke, recorded everything. We have you on high-definition video, staring down at Lily while she screamed for you. We have you closing the curtain to shut out her voice."
Rowan’s eyes went wild. He looked at Jaxson, then back at Marcus. "That little bitch Brooke... I’ll skin her alive!"
"You won't touch her, Rowan," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a register that made even Mack tighten his grip on his weapon. "And you won't ever touch Lily again. Lower your weapon, or my team will end this right now."
Rowan’s finger tightened on the trigger of his handgun. He was a bully who had spent his entire life being told he was untouchable. He could not accept that his wealth and his family name were powerless against the quiet, disciplined force of the man standing before him.
Pop.
A sharp, deafening crack echoed through the valley.
It wasn't a gunshot from Marcus or the agents. It was a non-lethal, high-velocity beanbag round fired by a tactical sniper positioned in the tree line. The round struck Rowan squarely in the chest, sending him sprawling backward onto the gravel, his gun flying from his hand.
Jaxson panicked, dropping his rifle to the ground and falling to his knees with his hands raised. "Don't shoot! Don't shoot! I didn't do anything! It was Rowan! Rowan was the one who hit her!"
"You coward!" Rowan wheezed from the gravel, clutching his bruised chest. "You helped me! You laughed!"
The federal agents moved in quickly, pinning Rowan to the ground and clicking heavy handcuffs onto his wrists, followed by Jaxson.
Marcus stood over Rowan, looking down at him with a cold, detached pity. "You thought you were a monster, Rowan. But you’re just a coward who needs a piece of iron to feel strong. You’re going to spend the next thirty years in a federal prison where no one cares about the Sterling name."
He turned back to Miranda, who was trembling on the porch steps.
"Marcus, please," Miranda whispered, tears finally spilling down her face. "I'm her mother. You can't do this to me. I was scared of them. They would have hurt me too."
"You chose them over your own daughter," Marcus said, his voice cracking slightly with the only hint of emotion he had shown all day. "You chose your family's money and their power over the child you brought into this world. That is a debt you can never repay."
Special Agent Vance stepped onto the porch, holding a pair of handcuffs. "Miranda Sterling, you are under arrest for felony child abuse, accessory to assault with a deadly weapon, and failure to provide aid to a minor in critical condition."
As Miranda was led down the steps, her weeping filling the quiet courtyard, Charles and Evelyn Sterling stepped out of the front door. They looked old, defeated, and completely hollowed out. Their empire was gone. Their wealth was frozen. Their political allies had fled.

"You've destroyed us," Evelyn whispered, her voice shaking with venomous hatred. "You've ruined our family."
"No," Marcus said, turning his back on them. "You destroyed yourselves. I just pulled the curtain open."
