Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Shield

Outside the Sterling Falls Sheriff's Department, the morning fog had lifted, leaving behind a crisp, clear day. Sheriff Thomas Landry sat in his office, his boots propped up on his desk, sipping coffee while reading a sports magazine. He was a heavy-set man with a thick mustache and a reputation for being extremely accommodating to the Sterling family's requests.

The heavy glass door of the lobby swung open, but it wasn't a local deputy entering.

Three men in dark blue tactical jackets with the letters FBI boldly printed in gold across their chests walked into the office. Behind them was Master Sergeant Mack MacKinnon, carrying a thick manila folder under his arm.

Landry slowly lowered his boots from the desk, his brow furrowing. "Can I help you fellas? This is local jurisdiction. You should have called ahead."

The lead FBI agent, a stern-faced woman named Special Agent Vance—Marcus’s second cousin and a key contact secured through Colonel Mitchell’s federal networks—set a heavy leather briefcase on Landry’s desk.

"Sheriff Thomas Landry," Agent Vance said, her voice echoing in the small office. "I am Special Agent Sarah Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Public Corruption Division. This is a federal warrant for your arrest, and a grand jury subpoena for all physical and digital records in this department."

Landry chuckled, though his face had gone slightly pale. "Arrest? For what? You can't just walk into my town and—"

"Conspiracy to commit federal civil rights violations, obstruction of justice, accepting bribes from a criminal enterprise, and accessory after the fact to the attempted murder of a minor," Agent Vance interrupted, her voice cutting through the room like a blade.

Mack stepped forward, opening the manila folder and laying several high-resolution photographs on the desk. They were clear, detailed images of Lily’s injuries, followed by bank ledger printouts showing monthly payments of twenty thousand dollars from Sterling Valley Finance to Landry’s personal bank account.

"We also have a fully authenticated audio recording of Evelyn Sterling stating that you are 'completely in their pocket' and will protect her sons from prosecution for beating a nine-year-old child," Mack said, his massive frame towering over the sheriff. "And we have a signed confession from your chief deputy, who decided ten minutes ago that he didn't want to go to a federal penitentiary for you."

Landry’s hand drifted instinctively toward his service weapon, his fingers twitching.

Mack didn't move, but his eyes locked onto Landry’s hand with a cold, predatory focus. "I wouldn't," Mack said softly. "The agents outside have three long rifles trained on your window. You aren't a sheriff anymore, Thomas. You're just a criminal who ran out of friends."

Landry’s shoulders sagged. His hand slowly moved away from his belt. He looked out the window and saw three unmarked black SUVs parked in the driveway, surrounded by armed federal agents.

"I was just doing what they told me," Landry muttered, his voice suddenly sounding old and broken. "You don't understand how it works here. If you don't play along with the Sterlings, you don't have a job. You don't have a house."

"You should have thought about that before you let them hurt my daughter," Marcus’s voice came from the doorway. He stepped into the office, his eyes locking onto the disgraced sheriff.

Landry looked up, his eyes wide with fear. He had known Marcus during his brief marriage to Miranda, but the man standing before him now looked entirely different. This was not the quiet, polite young soldier who had visited on holidays. This was a man who had brought the full, unstoppable weight of the federal government down on a corrupt empire in less than forty-eight hours.

"Marcus... I didn't know they were going to do that to Lily," Landry pleaded, his voice cracking. "I swear, I didn't know."

"You knew," Marcus said, his voice flat and empty of emotion. "You knew they beat her, and you did nothing. You let them stay in their house while my daughter lay in an ICU bed with a shattered leg. You are going to prison, Thomas. And you’re going to stay there for a very long time."

Agent Vance stepped behind the desk, pulled Landry’s hands behind his back, and snapped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. "Sheriff Landry, you have the right to remain silent. I suggest you use it."

As Landry was led out of the office in full view of his own deputies and the citizens of Sterling Falls, Marcus turned to Mack.

"The shield is down," Marcus said. "Now, we go to the house."
