Chapter 7 - Hanging by a Thread

The heat from the failing generator flickered wildly as heavy rain poured directly through the shattered roof section above them. Clara hung suspended over a dark pit of twisted rebar and broken concrete, her entire weight held only by Rachel’s grip on her wrist.

"Don't let go! Please don't let go!" Clara screamed, the wind whipping her hair across her face.

"I’m not letting go!" Rachel gritted out through clenched teeth. Her boots slipped against the wet steel floor of the sloping catwalk. She pinned her elbows against a protruding iron beam, her muscles burning under the strain. "Clara, I need you to reach up with your other hand! Grab my tactical vest!"

Below them, SWAT officers engaged Victor Vance, surrounding the forklift with non-lethal flash rounds and beanbag shotguns until the engine stalled out and Victor was dragged from the cab, finally subdued and cuffed.

"Rachel! Hold on!" two SWAT officers shouted, scrambling up the remaining stable section of the gantry ladder.

"I can't... hold... much longer!" Clara gasped, her fingers slipping against the slick fabric of Rachel’s wet uniform sleeves.

"Look at me, Clara!" Rachel commanded, her voice fierce and unwavering. "Lily is waiting for you at the hospital! She’s sitting in that chair right now holding your prescription note, waiting for her mom to come home! You are NOT giving up tonight!"

At the mention of her daughter’s name, something primal ignited in Clara’s eyes. With a ragged gasp, she swung her left arm upward, her fingers catching the heavy leather strap of Rachel’s chest rig.

With a final, desperate surge of strength, Rachel hoisted Clara upward just as the SWAT team reached them, grabbing both women under their arms and dragging them onto the safe, concrete landing of the upper stairwell.

They lay on the cold concrete, breathing heavily as the storm raged outside, the red and blue emergency lights from thirty police cruisers illuminating the shattered windows of the Packard Plant.

Marcus’s voice came through Rachel’s earpiece, trembling with raw emotion. "Rachel... do you copy? Is everyone clear?"

Rachel sat up slowly, resting a hand on Clara’s shoulder. She took a deep, shuddering breath and keyed her microphone.

"Dispatch... this is Officer Brooks," Rachel said, a small, weary smile breaking through her exhaustion. "We have the mother. Suspects in custody. We’re coming home."
