Chapter 6 - The Siege of Sector 4

The flashbangs turned the interior of the warehouse into a chaotic storm of smoke, fire, and blinding flashes.
"Police! Nobody move! Down on the ground!" shouted the lead SWAT tactical officer as heavily armed officers flooded the catwalk from the upper access gantries.
Julian Vance instantly dropped to his knees, throwing his weapon aside with calculated speed, knowing that an armed stance meant instant death from the sniper team positioned on the adjacent roof. But his lead guard panicked, blindly firing a burst of automatic fire toward the stairwell.
Rachel dove behind a steel pillar as bullets sparked off the metal casing inches from her head. She leaned out, fired two precise shots that neutralized the shooter, and then sprinted straight toward Clara through the swirling smoke.
"Clara! I'm Officer Brooks! I have Lily and Leo!" Rachel shouted, pulling a tactical knife from her vest and slicing through the heavy zip-ties securing Clara’s wrists.
Clara gasped, her eyes wide with terror and disbelief. "Lily? Leo? Are they okay? Is Leo..."
"Leo is at Children's Hospital! His fever is down, he’s safe, and Lily is with him!" Rachel reassured her, pulling the trembling mother to her feet behind the protection of a heavy concrete wall. "Lily called us. She kept your brother safe, Clara. She did everything you told her to do."
Tears streamed down Clara’s face, cutting clean tracks through the dirt and soot on her cheeks. "My baby girl... she saved him..."
Across the catwalk, SWAT officers secured Julian Vance in heavy plastic restraints. But just as the tactical leader reached for his radio to report Sector 4 clear, a low, ominous rumble echoed from the ground floor below.
A heavy industrial forklift, driven by Victor Vance, smashed through the wooden support pillars supporting the southern end of the catwalk structure.
"If I'm going down, nobody leaves this place!" Victor roared as the heavy machinery repeatedly rammed into the rusted iron supports.
The metal structure groaned under the immense stress. Rivets popped like gunshots. A thirty-foot section of the catwalk tipped violently to a forty-five-degree angle, dropping loose tools, iron beams, and concrete chunks into the dark abyss below.

Clara lost her footing, slipping toward the ragged edge of the collapsing platform.
"Clara!" Rachel lunged forward, throwing her body across the slick metal grating, her hand catching Clara’s wrist just as the section beneath her feet gave way completely and plunged fifty feet to the concrete floor.
