Chapter 9 - The Fall of an Empire

By noon, the news broke across every major television network and digital news outlet in the state of Ohio: ARTHUR VANCE, CLEVELAND BILLIONAIRE REAL ESTATE TYCOON, ARRESTED IN MASSIVE FEDERAL FRAUD AND EXTORTION SWEEP.

Footage flashed across the screens showing Arthur Vance—the man whose name had terrorized our lives for years, the man who had evicted us into freezing alleys and forced my mother into an early grave—being led out of his sprawling lakefront mansion in handcuffs, his face pale and twisted with rage as federal agents guided him into the back of an unmarked SUV.

Julian, Evelyn, and I were sitting in a secure, sunlit conference room on the top floor of the federal district attorney’s office, watching the broadcast on a large wall-mounted monitor. A warm plate of pastries and hot chocolate sat on the table before us, untouched as we watched justice unfold in real time.

"His assets have been frozen pending civil forfeiture," Evelyn explained, turning away from the screen with a satisfied smile. "Under the terms of your mother’s original patent filings and the newly executed inheritance deeds, you and your brother are now the sole legal beneficiaries of Vance Industries' intellectual property and corporate holdings."

I stared at her, blinking in sheer disbelief. "Me? But... I'm thirteen years old."

"A trustee committee, overseen by Julian and my office, will manage the estate until you turn eighteen," Evelyn reassured me warmly. "Every cent Arthur stole, every asset he hoarded, will be restored to your mother's name and placed into a secure trust for your future and Leo's."

Julian reached across the table and placed his hand gently over mine. His eyes were warm, filled with a deep, abiding pride that made my throat tighten with emotion.

"Your mother would be so proud of you, Lily," Julian said softly. "You kept your brother safe through the worst storm imaginable. You survived when the world tried to break you. And now, you get to live the life she always wanted for you."

For the first time in as long as I could remember, a genuine, unburdened smile spread across my face. I looked down at Leo, who was wide awake now, kicking his little legs happily and chewing on the edge of his blanket with two tiny, brand-new teeth.

"We're going to be okay, buddy," I whispered, kissing the top of his soft head. "We're finally going to be okay."
