Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm
The rest of the night passed in a blur of surreal comfort. I ate a warm, nourishing meal that Julian had ordered from a local restaurant, changing into a soft pair of oversized sweatpants and a cotton sweater provided from the apartment's guest wardrobe. Leo woke up once around two in the morning, fed eagerly on a bottle of warm formula from the fully stocked nursery kitchen, and fell right back asleep against my chest as I sat by the massive glass window, watching the snow blanket the sleeping city below.
Julian sat across from me in a leather armchair, staring into the flickering embers of the electric fireplace. For a long time, neither of us spoke. The silence wasn't heavy anymore; it was the quiet shared by two people who had carried an impossible burden and were finally watching the dawn approach.
"Did you know her well?" I asked softly, breaking the stillness. "My mom?"
Julian looked up, a soft, wistful smile touching his lips. "Better than anyone, before the money and the corporate greed poisoned our family. Clara was the smartest person in any room she walked into. She didn't care about luxury cars or penthouse suites. She just wanted to build things that made the world a little safer, a little warmer."
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "When Arthur started twisting her ambitions into a weapon for corporate control, she tried to walk away. That's when the threats began. She hid you away because she knew Arthur wouldn't hesitate to use you as leverage to force her compliance. But she also knew that she couldn't outrun him forever. That’s why she left that trail for me to find."

"She saved us," I whispered, a tear slipping down my cheek and catching in the fabric of my sweater. "Even after she was gone, she kept protecting us."
"And now it's our turn to protect her legacy," Julian said firmly, standing up and walking over to place a gentle hand on my shoulder. "Get some sleep, Lily. Tomorrow, everything changes."
