Chapter 7 - The Verdict and Retribution

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
When they returned to the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Amanda was trembling, clutching her Rosary beads, while Austin stared intently at the floorboards.
“Will the defendants please stand?” Judge Vance commanded.
Austin and Amanda stood up, flanked by bailiffs.
“On Count One: Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon resulting in Great Bodily Injury,” the foreperson announced clearly. “We find the defendant, Austin Wellman, GUILTY.”
“On Count Two: First-Degree Grand Theft and Financial Exploitation of the Elderly... GUILTY.”
“On Count Three: Corporate Fraud and Embezzlement... GUILTY.”
A quiet gasp rippled through the gallery.
The foreperson continued: “In the matter of Amanda Wellman: On Count One: Accessory to Felony Assault... GUILTY. On Count Two: Conspiracy to Commit Financial Fraud... GUILTY.”
Amanda burst into loud, hysterical sobs, collapsing back onto her chair. “No! I was just protecting my boy! He’s a good boy! Monica, tell them! Tell them you lied!”
I remained seated, looking at her with quiet, unyielding calm. I felt no rage, no bitter desire for revenge—only the deep, clean peace of absolute clarity.
Judge Vance silenced the room with a swift strike of her gavel.
“Austin Wellman,” Judge Vance pronounced sternly. “Your actions demonstrate a chilling lack of empathy, a predatory disregard for human life, and a monstrous betrayal of familial trust. You used your position of power to strip vulnerable people of their livelihoods and physically brutalized your own sister when she dared to bring the truth to light.
I sentence you to twenty-eight years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years.”
Austin’s knees buckled, but the bailiffs held him upright.
“Amanda Wellman,” the judge continued, looking down at my mother with severe disdain. “A mother’s duty is to nurture and protect her children. Instead, you fostered an environment of criminal narcissism, enabling abuse and actively celebrating the severe injury of your own daughter.

I sentence you to twelve years in state prison.”
As the bailiffs led Austin and Amanda away in handcuffs, Amanda looked back at me one last time, her eyes filled with desperate pleading. But I simply looked away, closing that chapter of my life forever.
