Chapter 6 - WHISPERS IN THE LEDGER

The concrete belly of the commercial parking garage was freezing, smelling of stale exhaust and frozen salt. Adam led Elena and Maya through the shadows, bypassing the dead security cameras. The power outage had hit this block too, leaving only the dim, amber glow of battery-powered exit signs to guide their steps.
Maya was silent, tucked securely against Elena’s chest under the heavy alpine harness. She had gone past the point of crying; her little hands were locked around the strap of Adam’s backpack, treating him like an anchor in the dark.
"The telecommunications vault is directly beneath us," Adam whispered, his breath pluming in the freezing air. "But the underground conduit access is through the shared basement wall with HopeBridge. They share a foundation block built in the 1920s."
Elena stopped, her face pale under the hood of Adam’s oversized parka. "If we go into the HopeBridge basement, we’re walking right underneath Evan’s feet. His administrative staff keeps the physical ledger backups in the vault down there."
"The physical ledgers," Adam repeated, his mind clicking into place. "The ones with the actual signatures of the mothers whose identities they stole?"
"Yes. Evan keeps them in a fireproof cage near the boiler room. He didn't trust digital copies for the real extortion files. He wanted something he could burn if the feds ever came with a hard drive warrant."
Adam looked down at his laptop backpack. The battery was at thirty percent. Digital evidence could be tied up in tech forensic arguments for months by wealthy lawyers. But a physical ledger containing confiscated passports, birth certificates, and forged signatures? That was an open-and-shut case.
"We’re getting that ledger," Adam said firmly.
He found the maintenance door leading to the sub-basement levels. Using a heavy steel tire iron he’d grabbed from a stranded utility truck in the garage, Adam pried the older latch open with a sharp, echoing crack.
They slipped into the subterranean corridors. It was a labyrinth of steam pipes, thick bundles of black fiber-optic cables, and old brick archways. The air here was warmer, heavy with the smell of rust and damp earth. As they crept closer to the HopeBridge side of the wall, Adam could hear the muffled, rhythmic thumping of a heavy industrial generator directly above them.
They found the fireproof cage. Through the heavy iron mesh, Adam saw rows of green canvas binders.
Suddenly, a door at the top of the basement stairs clicked open. A beam of sharp white LED light swept down the concrete steps.
"Check the lower storage," a voice called out from above. It was one of the security guards from the lobby. "Mr. Pike wants a full sweep. The doorman at the Moore tower said he didn't see the woman leave, which means she’s either on the roof or she crossed the lower catwalks."
Adam grabbed Elena’s shoulder, pulling her and Maya into the narrow recess between two massive hot-water tanks. He pressed his back against the hot metal, shielding them with his body.
The guard’s heavy boots crunched on the gritty concrete floor. The flashlight beam danced across the iron cage, illuminating the green binders, then shifted toward the water tanks.

Maya let out a tiny, involuntary gasp.
The footsteps stopped. The flashlight beam locked onto the edge of the water tank, just inches from Adam’s face.
