Chapter 4 - The Spider's Web

The morning sun broke over the Arizona desert with a sharp, blinding radiance.
By 7:00 AM, the house was already buzzing with quiet activity. Susan was in the kitchen, demanding that I make her a specific blend of imported espresso, while Heather lounged near the pool, barking orders into her phone about a luxury resort reservation she was planning for the weekend.
They were already spending the money they hadn't yet received.
Kyle came downstairs dressed in his sharpest navy suit. He checked his luxury wristwatch every two minutes, his eyes constantly glancing at the grand grandfather clock in the foyer.
"I have an early meeting with my investment group downtown," Kyle announced, grabbing a slice of toast from the island. "I might be gone most of the day finalizing the terms."
"Oh, really?" I said, setting down a mug of coffee in front of him. "What kind of terms?"
"Just paperwork, darling," he said offhandedly, giving me a dismissive wave. "Borning stuff. Legal releases, fund transfers, power-of-attorney verifications. You wouldn't be interested."
"Actually, I'm very interested in financial transfers," I said, leaning against the counter and looking him straight in the eye. "Especially large ones."
Kyle froze mid-bite. His eyes flickered with a sudden, sharp paranoia. "What do you mean by that?"
I let out a soft, melodic laugh that immediately disarmed him. "I just mean that as a project director, I deal with multimillion-dollar wire transfers all week. If you ever need help verifying escrow compliance or loan structuring, you should let me look over the documents. I'd hate for you to get taken advantage of by bad actors."
Kyle relaxed visibly, laughing off his moment of panic. "Ha! Right. Thanks, babe, but my partners have everything under control. We're using a top-tier private firm. Very professional."
"I'm sure they are," I said quietly.
He kissed my forehead, grabbed his briefcase, and headed for the front door. "I'll see you tonight, Chloe. Maybe we can celebrate!"
"Celebrate what?"
"Oh... just progress," he grinned, slipping out the door.
The moment his sports car pulled out of the driveway, I turned toward Susan and Heather. They were both watching me with smug, knowing smirks. They thought Kyle was walking out to claim their golden ticket, while I sat home like a dutiful, clueless housewife.
"Chloe, dear," Susan said, rising from her chair and setting her empty coffee cup on the marble counter. "While Kyle is out, Heather and I are going to go shopping at the fashion square. I took the liberty of putting three thousand dollars on your corporate card for a few essentials."
I didn't blink. "You used my card?"
"Well, yes," Susan said haughtily. "As Kyle's mother, I am part of this family. And since you earn so much, it's only fair that you share the wealth. Besides, once Kyle's business deal closes today, he'll be making far more than you ever could."
"Is that right?" I asked, stepping closer to her.
"It certainly is," Heather chimed in, walking inside from the patio with her sunglasses resting on her head. "Kyle is destined for big things, Chloe. You should start treating us with a little more respect. Frankly, the way you spoke to us yesterday about your old farm father was completely out of line."
I looked at both of them—these two arrogant, hollow human beings who had lived off my labor while despising the very hands that fed them.
"I see," I said softly. "Well, enjoy your shopping trip, Susan. Make sure you buy everything you'll ever need. Because after today, you won't be using my cards ever again."
Susan frowned, her lips curling into a sneer. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"It means I'm locking the accounts," I said plainly. "Starting now."
Before Susan could scream at me, I pulled out my primary smartphone, tapped an app, and instantly canceled every authorized secondary credit card issued under my household account. Within seconds, loud buzz notifications echoed from both Susan's and Heather's mobile phones.

"What did you do?!" Heather shrieked, clutching her phone as if it had caught fire. "Are you insane, Chloe?! How are we supposed to pay for our spa appointments?!"
"Use Kyle's money," I replied coldly, walking past them toward the entryway. "Since he's about to become so wealthy, I'm sure he can cover your lifestyle from now on."
"You arrogant bitch!" Susan hissed, her fake sweet demeanor completely shattering into venomous rage. "When Kyle comes back, I'm telling him to divorce you! We don't need you anymore! We have the—"
Susan caught herself right before she blurted out the truth about the Nebraska mortgage. She clamped her mouth shut, her eyes wide with shock at her own near-slip.
I paused near the door, turning my head to look at her over my shoulder.
"You have what, Susan? The farm money?"
Susan went dead pale. Heather gasped, backing away a step.
"You thought I didn't know?" I said, my voice dropping into a low, terrifying register. "You thought my father came here yesterday to deliver a farm snack? You thought I wouldn't notice the stench of your pathetic plot from a mile away?"
"You... you know?" Susan stammered, her knees visibly trembling beneath her designer pants.

"I know everything," I said, opening the front door. "I know about the loan. I know about the three million dollars. I know about the lithium deposit. And right now, Kyle is walking directly into a trap I built just for him."
I stepped outside into the bright morning light, slamming the heavy oak door behind me, leaving the two women trapped inside a house that was no longer their sanctuary, but their prison.
