Chapter 1 - The Snap

"Why should we babysit your kids?" my sister, Rachel, snapped over the phone. "You chose to be a single mom."
I froze in the hospital parking lot, still holding the diaper bag in one hand and my interview folder in the other.
"I've got a job interview in forty minutes," I said quietly. "I'm only asking for three hours."
Rachel laughed.
"Sounds like your problem."
Then she hung up.
I stood there staring at my phone while my six-year-old twins tugged on my sleeves asking if Aunt Rachel was coming.
She wasn't.
I missed the interview.
That evening, after putting the kids to bed, I scrolled through old photos and messages.
Weekend after weekend.
Birthday parties.
Beach trips.
Concerts.
Girls' weekends.
Vegas.
Wine tours.
Rachel smiling in every picture while I stayed home with her four children.
For two years.
Every Friday evening she'd drop them off with backpacks, snacks, and a quick, "You're the best!"
Every Sunday night she'd pick them up.
Not once had she offered money.
Not once had she even asked if I had plans.
And every single time...
I said yes.
Until today.
Without another word, I blocked her number.
Blocked her on social media.
Changed the code to my garage.
Then I hired a locksmith and replaced every exterior lock.
I didn't tell anyone.
Exactly one week later, my doorbell camera chimed.
Rachel stood on my porch with four excited kids, two oversized suitcases, and matching "Vegas Girls" T-shirts.
She rang the bell three times.
"Open up!" she shouted.
I answered through the camera.
"What do you need?"
She rolled her eyes.
"Seriously? We're late. Watch the kids."
"No."
She laughed.
"Very funny."
"I'm not joking."
Her smile disappeared.
Then she reached into her purse...

...and pulled out an old key.
Some people don't realize they've crossed the line until the door they've always expected to open suddenly stays closed.
