Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The news did not stay contained within the walls of the west hallway for long. In the ruthless underworld Damian Cross commanded, information was currency, and a sudden, violent shift in the boss's routine sent ripples through the entire organization.
Within two hours, Marcus Vance stood in Damian’s private study. Marcus was more than just Damian's second-in-command; he was the shadow that walked beside him, the brother-in-arms who had helped him build the empire from the ashes of betrayal.
"You're telling me," Marcus said slowly, pacing across the dark Persian rug of the study, his face contorted in disbelief, "that for six years, the boy we've been hunting across three continents has been living under your roof because you hired his foster mother to clean your floors?"
"Watch your tone, Marcus," Damian warned, sitting behind his mahogany desk. He wasn't looking at his second-in-command. Instead, he was staring down at a small, rusted silver band lying on a velvet cloth before him—the very bracelet Grace had brought down from the servants' quarters ten minutes earlier.
"Damian, think about this logically," Marcus urged, slamming a hand down on the edge of the desk. "It's too convenient. A dying stranger drops a kid on a porch? A frightened woman happens to apply for a maid position in the exact estate of the most dangerous man in the city? This smells like a setup. A trap planted by the Syndicate to get close to you."
"It's not a trap," Damian said coldly. He picked up the silver bracelet, his thumb tracing the worn engravings along the metal. "I saw him, Marcus. Upstairs, in the east wing nursery where Grace has been keeping him hidden. I stood outside the door and watched him through the glass. He has my mother’s eyes. He has the exact same small mole behind his right ear that I carry. No syndicate on earth could manufacture that level of biological proof."
"Where is he now?"
"Sleeping," Damian said, a strange, unfamiliar warmth flickering in his chest for the first time in two thousand nights. "Grace gave him something to calm his nerves after the commotion. But when he wakes up... everything changes."
Marcus crossed his arms, his expression grim. "And what about the men who burned your car six years ago? The ones who forced you into this war in the first place? If they find out the boy survived—if they find out he's here—they won't stop until they finish what they started."
Damian stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward against the oak-paneled wall. The casual, calculating CEO was gone, replaced instantly by the apex predator who had clawed his way to the top of the underworld.

"Let them try," Damian whispered, his eyes flashing with a cold, deadly fury. "For six years, I let them believe they won. Let them step foot near my son now, and I will show them what a true monster looks like."
Marcus looked at his longtime friend, realizing there was no turning back. The ghost had returned to the land of the living, and the war Damian Cross had paused six years ago was about to begin anew—only this time, he had everything to lose.
