Chapter 9 - A Family Chosen

Lily’s first birthday party was a celebration unlike anything I had ever experienced.

The backyard of my new home was bathed in the warm, golden light of a late spring afternoon. The massive oak tree was draped in soft white fairy lights, casting a magical glow over the lawn. There were no caterers in stiff white aprons, no expensive ice sculptures, and no tense, hushed conversations about social status.

Instead, the air was filled with the sound of laughter, acoustic guitar music playing from a small speaker, and the delicious aroma of a backyard barbecue that Thomas had insisted on cooking himself.

Maya was running around the grass with her kids, playing tag, while Marcus sat on the porch steps, sipping a beer and laughing as he talked with some of my designers from the office.

Lily was the absolute queen of the day. She was wearing a tiny crown made of daisies that Thomas had woven for her, and she was sitting on a picnic blanket, gleefully smashing her face into a small, homemade strawberry cake I had baked myself.

I stood on the porch, watching the scene play out before me.

My sister Jenny had texted me that morning from a burner phone, begging for a loan to cover her rent. I hadn't replied. I had simply deleted the message and blocked the number.

Looking out at my backyard, I realized that I didn't feel any anger toward her, or my parents. The resentment had burned itself out, leaving behind only a quiet, peaceful landscape of ash from which my new life had grown. They had chosen their path, and I had chosen mine.

"A penny for your thoughts?" Thomas asked, walking up behind me and wrapping his arms around my waist, pulling me back against his chest.

"I was just thinking about how lucky I am," I murmured, leaning my head back against his shoulder.

"You’re not lucky, Clara," he said softly, kissing my temple. "You’re brave. You built this. Every single bit of it."

"We built it," I corrected him, turning in his arms to face him.

He smiled, his eyes reflecting the warm golden light of the sunset. "Happy birthday to our little girl," he whispered.

"Happy birthday to our little girl," I repeated, my heart overflowing with a joy so pure it brought tears to my eyes.
