Chapter 8 - The First Embrace

Three days later, the sterile hospital room felt less like a fortress and more like a sanctuary.
The morning sun streamed through the wide windows of the private recovery suite, casting a warm, golden glow across the armchair where I sat waiting. Carmen stood beside me, carefully folding a stack of warm, soft cotton blankets before stepping aside with a beaming smile.
"All yours, Mama," Carmen said softly, gently lifting Eliza from her open crib and cradling her against her shoulder before transferring the tiny, feather-light bundle directly into my arms.
For a second, time seemed to stop entirely.
Eliza weighed barely four pounds, but the moment her tiny body settled against my chest, she felt like the heaviest, most precious anchor in the universe. She didn't have any tubes taped to her face anymore. Her skin was a soft, healthy pink, and as I pulled her close, she let out a tiny, contented sigh, her miniature fingers uncurling against my collarbone.
"Look at her," Matthew whispered, kneeling beside my chair with tears shining openly in his eyes. He gently reached out, running the tip of his finger along Eliza’s downy dark hair. "She’s finally home in our arms."
Sadie bounced excitedly on her toes beside us, leaning in close to stroke her baby sister’s tiny heel. "Can I hold her hand, Mommy? Just one finger?"
"Of course you can, sweetheart," I whispered, shifting slightly so Sadie could get closer.
Sadie extended her index finger with immense care, as if she were touching something made of spun glass. Eliza’s tiny hand instinctively twitched, wrapping her microscopic fingers around Sadie’s much larger nail with surprising strength.
Sadie beamed with pride, looking up at Matthew and me as if she had just conquered the world. "She likes me. She knows I kept her safe."

"She sure does, big sister," Matthew said, wrapping one arm around Sadie and the other around my shoulders, drawing us all into a tight, unbreakable circle of warmth and protection.
Outside the window, the traffic on the highway hummed along, but inside our little room, there was only peace. The storm had passed, the deception had been swept away, and our new beginning had finally arrived.
