Part 2 The Papers Nathan Found Exposed a Betrayal Bigger Than the Affair

Emma stared at the stack of documents spread across her kitchen table while Lily slept upstairs in her own bed for the first time since leaving the hospital.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Nathan sat across from her, a laptop open beside him. His expression was calm, but Emma knew her brother well enough to recognize anger when he buried it under professionalism.

“What am I looking at?” she asked.

Nathan slid the first page toward her.

“Transfers.”

Emma scanned the numbers.

Thousands.

Then tens of thousands.

Then amounts so large they made her stomach tighten.

The dates stretched back almost a year.

“No,” she whispered.

“Yes.”

Nathan pointed at the highlighted lines.

“Your inheritance account was never untouched.”

Emma felt cold.

Grant had promised after her mother's funeral that the money would stay protected. It was supposed to be Lily's future. College. A first home someday. Security.

Instead, Grant had been draining it little by little.

“How much?”

Nathan hesitated.

“Almost three hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”

The room tilted.

Emma grabbed the edge of the table.

“That’s impossible.”

“It gets worse.”

Nathan opened another file.

Property records.

Invoices.

Credit card statements.

Vacation rentals.

Jewelry purchases.

Luxury hotel bookings.

Dozens of transactions.

All connected to one woman.

A woman named Vanessa Cole.

Emma stared at her photograph.

Young.

Beautiful.

Smiling beside Grant in pictures pulled from social media.

“How long?”

“At least eleven months.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Nearly a year.

A year of lies.

A year of pretending.

A year of stolen money.

And while Lily fought for her life, Grant had chosen Vanessa.

Nathan folded his hands.

“There’s something else.”

Emma looked up.

“What?”

“The lake house wasn’t rented.”

Her stomach dropped.

“It was purchased.”

Silence filled the room.

“With your inheritance.”

For several seconds Emma couldn't speak.

Grant hadn't just stolen money.

He had built another life.

A secret life.

Using her mother's legacy.

The next forty-eight hours moved quickly.

Nathan connected Emma with an attorney.

The attorney connected Emma with a forensic investigator.

The investigator uncovered more.

Grant had opened hidden credit accounts.

Hidden investments.

Hidden transfers.

Every discovery revealed another lie.

By the time Grant finally returned home from Lake Geneva, sunburned and smiling, Emma was ready.

He walked through the front door carrying a fishing bag.

“Hey, babe.”

Emma sat calmly on the couch.

Nathan stood near the window.

The attorney sat at the dining table.

Grant froze.

“What’s going on?”

Emma placed a thick folder on the coffee table.

“Sit down.”

His smile vanished.

“What is this?”

“The truth.”

For the first time since she met him, Grant looked genuinely afraid.

And when he opened the folder, the color drained from his face.

Every transfer.

Every receipt.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Documented.

Verified.

Impossible to explain away.

“Emma, I can explain—”

“No,” she said quietly.

“You've been explaining for eleven months.”

Grant looked from her to Nathan.

Then back again.

The confidence he carried into the room disappeared completely.

Because for the first time, he realized something.

He wasn't in control anymore.
