Chapter 10 - The Sunlit Horizon

The sun hung low over the West Hills of Portland, casting a warm, golden amber glow across the surface of the Willamette River and turning the downtown glass towers into shimmering monoliths of light.
I sat on a wooden park bench beneath the sprawling branches of an old oak tree, watching Lily chase a flock of friendly pigeons across the open lawn. She stumbled once in the soft grass, laughed out loud, and popped right back up on her feet without a single hesitation, her small legs carrying her forward with unstoppable, joyful momentum.
My phone vibrated gently in my jacket pocket. I pulled it out, expecting an email notification from the bank’s evening audit queue. Instead, it was a calendar reminder I had set for myself six months ago, right after I signed the lease on our east-side apartment.
The notification popped up on the screen in crisp, clean letters: Rent Paid. In Full. Forever.
A quiet, profound sense of peace settled deep into my chest. I looked back out at the open river, letting the cool evening breeze brush against my face. I didn't owe rent to anyone. I didn't have to apologize for a medical emergency, explain my budget to people who kept a ledger of my survival, or worry that a single missed payment would leave my child out on the cold asphalt.
Lily came running back across the grass, her cheeks flushed with exercise and happiness, holding up a polished river stone she had found near the water’s edge.
“Look, Mommy! Look how smooth it is!” she cried, dropping breathless into the space beside me on the bench and pressing the cool stone into my palm.
I closed my fingers around the smooth, river-worn rock, wrapping my other arm tightly around her shoulders and pulling her close against my side.

“It’s beautiful, sweetheart,” I whispered, kissing the top of her head as the evening lights of Portland began to twinkle across the darkening skyline. “Just beautiful.”
We sat together on the bench as the stars began to emerge one by one in the vast, clear night sky—safe, secure, and surrounded by a love that no one could ever sell, strip away, or put a price tag on again.
