Chapter 3 - The Price of Cabo

The hospital room erupted into chaos, but to me, it felt like it was playing in slow motion.

Mom dropped her smoothie. The thick, green liquid splattered across the sterile linoleum floor, creeping toward Vanessa’s designer sandals. Vanessa didn't even notice. She was staring at Detective Miller as if he had just spoken to her in a foreign language.

"This is a mistake," Mom pleaded, her voice trembling as she grabbed the detective's arm. "You can't arrest her! She’s a bride! Her wedding is in two weeks! She didn't know it was fake! If anyone is at fault, it’s Hannah! She set a trap for her own sister!"

Detective Miller calmly but firmly disengaged Mom’s hand from his sleeve. "Mrs. Vance, your daughter entered Hannah’s private residence without permission while Hannah was under anesthesia. She took an item that did not belong to her, along with legal documentation that did not belong to her, and sold it for cash. Whether the item was real or fake does not change the intent to commit theft. However, because the item sold was technically worth sixty dollars, but sold for twelve thousand under fraudulent terms, she has defrauded the jeweler as well."

"But the jeweler has the ring!" Vanessa cried, tears finally spilling over her heavily mascaraed eyelashes. "I can just go back! I’ll give the money back! I’ll cancel the honeymoon!"

"You said you already wired the money to Cabo, Vanessa," I pointed out from my bed. "Can you get it back in the next ten minutes?"

"Hannah, please!" Vanessa sobbed, rushing to the side of my bed. She tried to grab my hand, but I pulled it away, wincing slightly as the IV line tugged. "Please tell them it was a joke! Tell them you gave me permission! If you don't, they’re going to ruin my life!"

"You didn't care about ruining my life," I said, my voice cold and steady. "You knew what that ring meant to me. Grandma held my hand when she gave it to me. She told me to use it to build a life for myself, to never let anyone bully me into giving up my worth. And the moment I was wheeled into an operating room, you ran to my apartment to steal it."

"It was just a piece of metal!" Mom yelled, her face contorted in an ugly sneer of desperation. "We are your family, Hannah! Your sister's happiness should mean more to you than some dead woman's gold!"

"Don't speak about Grandma like that," I said, and for the first time, my voice carried a sharp edge that made Mom flinch. "Grandma June saw right through both of you. That’s why she left her estate in a trust managed by Arthur, and not by you."

Arthur Pendelton nodded, a grim smile on his face. "Indeed. And as the executor of June's trust, I have already contacted the jeweler, Mr. Sterling. When he realized he had been handed a cubic zirconia with a stolen certificate, he was understandably furious. He has already filed charges for grand larceny by trick."

"Larceny by trick?" Vanessa whispered, the words sounding foreign and terrifying on her tongue.

"It means you lied to get money, Vanessa," Detective Miller said, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "We need to go down to the station. You have the right to remain silent..."

"No! Mom, do something!" Vanessa screamed as Detective Miller stepped behind her. The cold click of the handcuffs echoing in the small hospital room was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.

"Hannah, tell them to stop! I’m your mother! I command you to stop this!" Mom shrieked, batting at the detective, who sternly warned her that she would be arrested for obstruction of justice if she interfered.

"I have nothing to stop, Mom," I said, closing my eyes. "I’m just a patient recovering from surgery. I think I need to rest now."

As Vanessa was led out of the room in tears, her white sundress trailing in the spilled green smoothie, Mom turned to me, her eyes filled with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You are no daughter of mine," she hissed.

"Good," I replied, opening my eyes to look at her one last time. "Then you won't mind when I have the locks changed on my life."
