Part 9: Chosen Family

By the time summer rolled around again, marking two full years since Lily had come home to live with me, our little family had expanded its circle of chosen kin in the most wonderful ways.
Arthur had officially become a permanent fixture at our Sunday family dinners, bringing his dry wit, his bottomless supply of interesting trivia, and occasionally teaching Lily how to play chess on an antique wooden board he had carried out of his old chambers. Rachel and her partner had become our default emergency contacts, vacation buddies, and co-conspirators in annual Halloween costume disasters.
On a warm Saturday afternoon in July, we hosted a massive backyard barbecue at Rachel’s house to celebrate Lily’s eighth birthday. There were water balloons, a towering chocolate cake covered in purple sprinkles, and a dozen kids from Lily’s art class running around the lawn screaming with laughter.
Lily stood by the picnic table, wearing a bright yellow sundress, helping Arthur slice watermelon while carefully guarding her stuffed fox, Barnaby, who was propped up safely against a lawn chair wearing a tiny paper party hat.
I watched her from the porch, holding a glass of iced tea, a quiet, profound peace settling deep into my bones.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Rachel asked, walking up beside me and handing me a plate piled high with potato salad and grilled corn.

“Just thinking about how different life looks when you stop letting other people write your script,” I said, smiling as Lily laughed at something Arthur whispered to her, causing the retired judge to chuckle in his dignified, rumbling way.
“You did good, Clara,” Rachel said softly, bumping her shoulder against mine. “You took a grenade for that little girl, and you built a fortress she never has to leave.”
