Chapter 4 - The Legal Trap

Uncle Thomas arrived on Thursday morning driving a battered pickup truck, looking like an avenging angel in a flannel shirt and worn blue jeans. He didn't go to my apartment first; instead, he met me at the district attorney’s office.
My lawyer, a sharp-eyed woman named Sarah Chen, had called an emergency hearing. Because Betty had attempted to breach a school security perimeter using fraudulent pretenses to abduct a minor, Sarah had successfully petitioned the family court judge for an immediate modification of the protective orders, alongside an expedited warrant for Betty’s arrest on felony stalking and attempted interference with custody.
“Your mother is digging her own grave,” Sarah told us as we sat in the conference room reviewing the case files. “By showing up at the school and lying to staff, she completely destroyed any argument that this was an innocent family dispute or a misunderstanding. The judge is furious.”
“And Alana?” I asked.
“Alana is trying to distance herself publicly, but our digital forensics team pulled her metadata from the original video,” Sarah replied, tapping a stylus against her tablet. “She didn't just record it—she uploaded the initial clip to a private group chat with a caption mocking the child’s reaction. We’ve added her as a co-conspirator to the felony child endangerment charges.”
Just then, the courtroom bailiff poked his head into the conference room. “Counsel, Judge Montgomery is ready for you. Defendants are present.”
When we walked into the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Betty sat at the defense table flanked by a public defender who looked like he wanted to crawl under the floorboards. Alana sat a few rows back, glaring at me with eyes full of venom, whispering frantically to her phone.
Betty looked disheveled. Her hair was unbrushed, and her designer handbag sat crumpled on the table. When she saw me walk in with Uncle Thomas standing protectively at my side, her face flushed a furious shade of crimson.
“Josslyn!” Betty screeched, standing up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the linoleum. “You ungrateful, wicked little—!”
“Sit down, Mrs. Miller, or I will have you removed and held in contempt before we even begin,” Judge Montgomery snapped, his voice echoing through the quiet courtroom like a gunshot.
Betty sank back into her chair, huffing indignantly, but she kept her glare locked on me.
Judge Montgomery adjusted his glasses, scanning the stack of documents before him. He looked over the police reports, the school surveillance stills showing Betty trying to check out Everly, and the affidavit from the child psychologist detailing Everly’s night terrors.
“Mrs. Miller,” Judge Montgomery began, addressing Betty directly. “Last week, this court issued a protective order keeping you and your associates away from your daughter and granddaughter. Yesterday, you walked onto a school campus and attempted to abduct a four-year-old child using fraudulent statements.”
“I am her grandmother!” Betty shouted, ignoring her public defender’s frantic tugs on her sleeve. “I have every right to see my grandbaby! This whole thing is a conspiracy by a bitter daughter who wants to ruin our family!”
“Your definition of family involves sealing a four-year-old child in a cardboard box marked for factory return and terrorizing her,” Judge Montgomery said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm register. “The court has reviewed the video evidence. It is some of the most grotesque, cruel behavior I have encountered in twenty years on the bench.”
The public defender cleared his throat nervously. “Your Honor, my client expresses remorse—symbolic remorse—for what was intended as a misguided domestic joke—”
“There is no joke here, Counsel,” Judge Montgomery interrupted sharply. “Effective immediately, the protective orders are upgraded to permanent, lifelong restraining orders prohibiting any contact whatsoever with Josslyn Miller and minor child Everly Miller. Furthermore, based on the felony warrant issued this morning for attempted abduction and witness intimidation, bail for Betty Miller is hereby revoked. Take her into custody.”
The courtroom erupted.
Betty screamed as two bailiffs stepped up behind her, grabbing her arms and pulling her wrists behind her back. “You can’t do this! I’m a respected member of this community! Josslyn, you’ll pay for this! You’ll rot!”
She kicked and thrashed as they led her through the side doors, her shrill protests echoing down the hallway until they were cut off by the heavy oak door slamming shut.
Alana jumped up from her seat in the gallery, her phone camera pointed straight at the bench. “This is corruption! I’m live-streaming this kangaroo court!”
“Ma’am, put that phone away or you’ll be joining your mother in holding,” Judge Montgomery warned, pointing a finger at Alana. “And let me make this very clear to you and anyone else watching: any further online harassment, doxxing, or attempts to interfere with the petitioner or her child will result in immediate felony indictments with zero possibility of probation.”
Alana lowered her phone slowly, her face turning pale as the reality of her situation finally began to sink in. She grabbed her bag and bolted from the courtroom, practically tripping over her own feet in her haste to escape.

Uncle Thomas placed a heavy, reassuring hand on my shoulder as we walked out into the sunshine.
“It’s over, Joss,” he said softly. “At least the legal war is won. Now, we take the next step.”
