Chapter 3 - The Arrest and the Fallout

Reid walked down the hallway with an authority that made the police officers step aside. He swiped a high-security keycard against the reader beside the door, typed in a long master passcode, and pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner.
The heavy deadbolts disengaged with a loud, metallic clank.
The door swung open. Paige immediately rushed forward, her face red, her arms flailing. "Finally! You tell your landlord or whoever owns this place that they are going to jail! My children are traumatized! I have a right to be here, my sister—"
"Ma'am, step back," one of the officers commanded, placing a heavy, gloved hand on Paige's shoulder and pushing her firmly but gently back into the foyer.
"Don't touch me!" Paige screamed. "Do you know who I am? Marissa! Marissa, tell them!" She looked around wildly, realizing there was no one there but the officers and the tall man in the suit.
Reid stepped into the apartment. He didn't look at Paige. He walked straight past her, kneeling down in front of Nolan and Hallie. The flashing red lights had been deactivated when he entered the master code, returning the apartment to a soft, bright white light.
"Hey there," Reid said to the kids, his voice surprisingly warm and gentle. "I'm Deputy Marshal Langford. Everything is okay now. The loud noise is over. You guys like hot chocolate?"
Nolan nodded tearfully, holding his little sister tightly.
"Officer Davies," Reid called out, looking over his shoulder. "Can you take these two downstairs to the lobby? There's a convenience store open across the street. Get them some snacks and keep them warm. I'll handle the mother."
"You can't take my kids!" Paige shrieked, lunging toward Reid.
The two officers immediately intercepted her, twisting her arms behind her back and forcing her against the wall. The sound of metal handcuffs clicking into place echoed clearly through the penthouse speakers to my laptop in London.
"Paige Keane," the officer read her rights in a dry, monotonous tone. "You are under arrest for criminal trespass, breaking and entering, and tampering with federal property."
"This is my sister's apartment!" Paige yelled, her voice cracking as she struggled against the cuffs. "She gave me the code! Marissa, you bitch! I know you can hear me! Help me!"
Reid walked over to the study, looked at the damaged frame of his safe, and then walked back to the living room. He picked up his phone and dialed. My phone rang.
"Marissa," Reid said, holding the phone to his ear while looking directly at the security camera in the corner of the room, knowing I was watching. "Your sister is claiming you gave her permission to reside here. Is that true?"
"No, Reid," I said, making sure my voice was clear so it would be recorded on his body camera or the apartment's security system. "I explicitly told her the apartment was sold. I told her she had no permission to enter. I have the text messages to prove it."
Reid nodded. "Thank you. I'll need you to email those screenshots to my office." He looked down at Paige, who was now sobbing, her forehead pressed against the wall. "Your sister says you're lying, ma'am. And unfortunately for you, she has the receipts."
"She's lying!" Paige screamed. "She always hates me! She's always been jealous of me because I have a family and she has nothing but her stupid job!"
"Take her down," Reid ordered the officers.
As they led a screaming, crying Paige out of the penthouse, Reid walked over to the main security console on the wall. He looked directly into the camera lens.
"I'll handle the secure transport of her kids to the local child protective services holding facility until a legal guardian can pick them up," Reid told me. "I assume your parents will be involved shortly."
"They will," I sighed, rubbing my temples. "And they are going to make my life a living hell."

"Only if you let them, Marissa," Reid said softly. "You did nothing wrong. Sleep well."
The feed cut to black.
