Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The room descended into a stunned silence.

Lily stared at the man. She had never heard her mother mention a grandfather. As far as Lily knew, her family consisted of only her mother and the new babies.

"You're lying," Lily said quietly, her voice small but firm. "Mommy said we don't have a family. She said it's just us."

Arthur Pendelton looked as though he had been struck. He buried his face in his hands for a brief moment before looking up again, his expression filled with profound regret.

Marcus stepped forward, placing a hand on Arthur's shoulder. "Let's talk in the hallway, Mr. Pendelton."

In the private consultation room down the hall, Arthur sat across from Marcus, Sarah, and Eleanor from CPS. His hands were shaking as he poured himself a glass of water.

"Eight years ago," Arthur began, his voice raspy, "Clara was twenty-two. She was ambitious, brilliant, and stubborn—just like me. She fell in love with a man who was dangerous, a man involved in illegal gambling and fraud. I forbade her from seeing him. I gave her an ultimatum: leave him, or be cut off from the family legacy and every resource I possessed."

Arthur closed his eyes, a heavy tear rolling down his cheek. "I thought I was playing tough love. I thought she would realize her mistake and come running back to her father. But Clara was too proud. She packed her bags that very night and vanished. A year later, the man abandoned her when she became pregnant with Lily. Clara never reached out to me. She never asked for a single penny."

"Why didn't you look for her?" Sarah asked, her tone carrying a hard edge.

"I did!" Arthur exclaimed, his voice cracking with emotion. "I hired private investigators for years! But Clara had deliberately changed her last name back to her mother's maiden name, cut ties with all mutual acquaintances, and moved from town to town, living completely off the grid, working cash jobs. She didn't want to be found. She hated me for forcing her to choose."

Arthur pulled a tablet out of his briefcase and turned it toward Eleanor. "Two hours ago, I saw the news report about the seven-year-old girl with the wheelbarrow. They showed a blurred photo of the mother's house and mentioned the name 'Clara Vance.' I recognized the rare middle name and the face from the police broadcast photo. I boarded my private jet immediately."

Eleanor reviewed the documents Arthur provided—birth certificates, family trust documents, legal proof of paternity, and private investigator reports dating back seven years.

"Mr. Pendelton," Eleanor said carefully. "You have legal standing as the biological grandfather. But Clara is still alive, and until she wakes up—or fails to wake up—custody decisions must consider the best interests of the children. They don't know you."

"I don't care about the money or my pride anymore," Arthur said, looking Eleanor directly in the eyes. "I will pay for every top medical specialist in the country to save Clara. I will buy a home right next to this hospital if I have to. I just want to fix the damage I caused eight years ago."

While Arthur offered his immense wealth to bring in the world's best doctors, in the adult ICU, Clara's heart monitors began to beep rapidly.

"Code Blue!" a nurse shouted from the hallway. "Room 112, cardiac arrest!"

Marcus and Sarah rushed down the hall just as medical staff swarmed the room. Through the window, they saw the defibrillator pads being placed on Clara's chest.

"Clear!"

Clara's body jolted on the bed. The monitor showed a flatline.

"Charging to 200! Clear!"

Again, her body jolted. The line stayed flat. The rhythmic, terrifying drone of the heart monitor filled the corridor.
