Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at Bellagio

The morning sun reflected off the waters of Lake Como like a sheet of crushed diamonds. A sleek black saloon car wound its way along the narrow coastal roads, carrying Matteo, Sofia, baby Luca, and Avvocato Croft toward the iron gates of Villa Conti.
As the car turned into the long driveway lined with towering cypress trees, Sofia’s breath caught in her throat. There, standing majestically at the edge of the water, was a magnificent neoclassical mansion of pale yellow stone, featuring arched windows, marble terraces, and grand stone lions guarding the wide entrance steps.
"It’s... it’s exactly as Grandma described it," Sofia whispered, tears coming to her eyes as she looked through the window. "The lion with the chipped left ear... she told me she used to sit on it when she was five years old."
The car came to a stop in the courtyard. Standing at the top of the marble steps was Baron Julian Moretti, flanked by two armed security guards and his chief corporate legal counsel, a sharp-faced man named Dr. Vane.
Matteo stepped out first, opening the door for Sofia. She held Luca securely against her chest, wrapped in a plush cream-colored wool coat that Matteo had bought her. She held her head high, her dark eyes shining with quiet dignity.
"Matteo," Moretti sneered, descending the steps slowly, his walking stick tapping against the stone. "You bring a trespasser and an infant to my private residence? You are treading on dangerous legal ground."
Avvocato Croft stepped forward, pulling an official document with a red judicial seal from his briefcase. "Baron Moretti. This is an official Order of Preservative Inspection issued by the Civil Court of Milan. As legal custodians of the disputed Conti Estate Trust, you are required under Article 612 of the Civil Code to allow an inspection of the primary library and historical fixtures by authorized appraisers."
Moretti’s jaw tightened, his eyes darting toward the court order. He knew that defying a direct judicial mandate in front of witnesses would give the police immediate grounds to seize the property.
"Fine," Moretti spat, turning his back on them. "Inspect whatever trash you want. But you have one hour before my security team removes you from the premises."
They entered the grand hall. The interior of Villa Conti was breathtaking—frescoes painted on soaring ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and walls lined with priceless 18th-century portraiture. Yet, beneath the splendor lay an air of neglect, as if the house knew its true owners were absent.
Matteo led the group through a set of double mahogany doors into Count Alberto’s private study. The room was dominated by a massive floor-to-ceiling library and an immense carved walnut desk featuring intricate dragon head motifs.
"This is it," Matteo said, placing his leather appraiser’s bag on the desk. He pulled out the velvet box containing the Torriani emerald ring.
Moretti stood near the fireplace, his arms crossed, watching with a contemptuous smirk. "You think you can find a secret compartment based on fairy tales? My family has lived in this house for forty years. We know every inch of these walls."
Matteo didn't answer. He approached the walnut desk, examining the carved dragon heads along the sides. "In master jeweler Torriani’s design notes from 1923, he noted that key mechanisms were always integrated into symbolic architecture. Dragon eyes were used for release pins."
Matteo pressed the polished glass eye of the left dragon head while sliding the right dragon's jaw downward. A soft, mechanical click echoed through the quiet room.
Moretti’s smirk faltered slightly.
A secret panel on the front face of the desk slid back smoothly, revealing a round platinum lock face. In the center was an oval recess shaped precisely like the setting of the Torriani emerald ring, flanked by a narrow keyhole.
Sofia took a deep breath, stepping forward. "Grandma told me... 'The key is kept where the light touches the water at noon.'"
Matteo looked toward the grand arched window overlooking the lake. Positioned on a pedestal in the window niche was an antique brass sundial. He walked over, turned the sundial base ninety degrees counter-clockwise, and lifted the central gnomon. Hidden in the marble base was a small, filigree platinum key.
Moretti’s face drained of all color. "Stop them!" he roared, turning to his security guards. "They are damaging private property!"
"Touch them and you will be arrested for obstruction of justice and physical assault!" Avvocato Croft bellowed, holding up his smartphone, which was recording the entire scene live to a legal cloud server.
The guards hesitated, looking at the court order and the recording phone.
Matteo handed the platinum key to Sofia. "It's your home, Sofia. You turn it."
Sofia stepped up to the desk, holding Luca in her left arm. With her right hand, she placed the emerald ring into the oval recess. It fit with absolute, seamless perfection. Then, she inserted the platinum key into the keyhole and turned it to the right.
A heavy, resonant sound of sliding steel bolts echoed behind the wall. A section of the oak library shelving swung open, revealing a hidden wall safe made of reinforced steel.
The door of the safe swung wide. Inside sat a brass-bound leather box stamped with the gold crest of the Conti family, alongside bundles of historical land deeds, property titles, and original stock certificates.
Sofia reached in and pulled out the top document. It was a handwritten parchment signed by Count Alberto Conti in 1943.
Avvocato Croft stepped beside her and read the bold Italian script aloud: "To whoever finds this record: I leave the entirety of the Conti estates, title, lands, and wealth exclusively to my daughter, Elena Conti, and her direct descendants. Any claim by custodian managers is null and void upon presentation of the Imperial Ring."

Moretti stumbled back against the fireplace, his hand clutching his walking stick as if for dear life. His face was a mask of pale, furious shock. "This... this is a forgery! It's impossible!"
"It is official, Baron," Croft said triumphantly. "And under Italian law, your legal authority over this trust is terminated effective immediately. You have twenty-four hours to vacate Villa Conti."
