Chapter 6 - The Storm Breaks

My eyes snapped open in the darkness. Keith was already moving, tossing the covers aside and grabbing a heavy steel flashlight from the nightstand.
“Stay behind me,” he whispered, his voice deadly calm.
We crept down the dark hallway toward Lily’s room. The air in the corridor was cold, carrying the smell of damp earth and rain. The door to the nursery was slightly ajar, a sliver of darkness swaying in the draft.
Keith pushed the door open with his foot, shining the flashlight beam into the room.
The window was wide open, rain splashing onto the hardwood floor. Standing next to the crib, her arms reaching down toward my sleeping baby, was Clara. She was soaked in rain, holding a large fabric travel bag.
“Don’t touch her!” Keith roared, lunging forward.
Clara turned instantly, spraying a harsh chemical stream of pepper spray directly into Keith’s face. Keith gasped, dropping the flashlight as he stumbled back, clutching his blinding, burning eyes.
I didn't hesitate. I tackled Clara with everything I had, slamming her against the changing table. Supplies tumbled to the floor—diaper creams, wipes, powder. Clara clawed at my face, her nails scratching my cheek, but the mother’s instinct inside me was a raging fire. I pinned her arms against the floor, screaming at the top of my lungs for help.
Keith, despite being temporarily blinded, managed to feel his way forward, using his weight to pin Clara’s legs down while I locked her arms behind her back.
Outside, the wail of sirens cut through the storm. Marcus, who had been patrolling the street in his car, had seen the power cut on our block and had already dialed 911 while running toward our house.
Seconds felt like hours until Marcus burst into the nursery with his gun drawn, securing Clara with heavy-duty zip ties until the police arrived.
When the officers swarmed the house, they searched Clara’s travel bag. Inside, they found chloroform, fake identification documents, a baby passport under a false name, and one-way international flight tickets to a country without an extradition treaty with the United States.
Bridget hadn't just been planning to frame me for negligence. She and Clara were preparing to kidnap Lily and spirit her out of the country forever.
While the paramedics treated Keith’s eyes and my scratches, officers raided Bridget’s home. They found her sitting in her living room with packed suitcases, waiting for Clara to deliver my daughter. The ankle monitor lay snuffed and wrapped in aluminum foil on her kitchen counter—she had tampered with it during the storm, triggering a delayed alert that the police were already investigating.

Both Bridget and Clara were arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping, burglary, assault, and felony child endangerment.
This time, there would be no bail.
