I sat on the wide stone veranda of Sterling Manor, watching her race across the lawn with her golden retriever, the afternoon sun turning her hair into a halo of spun gold.

Margaret was a forgotten ghost in a distant state nursing home, her fortune entirely liquidated and her name erased from polite society. David remained behind the cold gray walls of federal prison, a cautionary tale of arrogance and cruelty.

I walked down the stone steps without a cane, without a limp, and without a single shadow of fear in my heart.
My phone buzzed on the rustic oak table beside my iced tea. It was a notification from the foundation—another successful housing grant approved for single mothers escaping abusive environments.
