Chapter 7 - Unmasking Aiden's Hidden Motives

I let the silence stretch for several agonizing moments, allowing the suffocating weight of what Aiden had done to settle over everyone in the room. In legal practice, you learn that people rarely lie without a motive. Panic and stupidity explain part of Aiden’s hysterical reaction, but fabricating an entire criminal narrative against a seven-year-old child required a deeper, darker driving force.

I slowly walked across the room, stopping just inches from where Aiden stood trembling beside the television stand. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to.

"Why, Aiden?" I asked quietly, my eyes locked onto his darting, panicked gaze. "Why would you go to such extreme lengths? Why call the police? Why try to brand your own nephew as a violent criminal? What are you hiding?"

Aiden swallowed hard, his throat bobbing as he tried to summon a shred of his former arrogance. "I-I was protecting my son! What else was I supposed to think when I saw a sharp tool in his hand?"

"You saw a toy being repaired," I corrected instantly. "You walked in, saw them playing, and instead of asking a simple question, you immediately flew into a rage, grabbed Jacob so hard you scraped his arm, and dialed 911. That isn't protective parenting, Aiden. That's a calculated escalation. Why?"

My father slowly lowered his hands from his face, looking up at Aiden with tired, bloodshot eyes. The blind favoritism and automatic trust he had always afforded his younger son were finally cracking under the harsh light of reality. "Aiden... what is your brother talking about? What is going on?"

Aiden flinched, refusing to meet our father's eyes.

"I'll tell you what's going on," a sharp, furious voice rang out from behind me. Helen stepped forward, having handed Jackson a juice box to calm his nerves. Her eyes burned with righteous indignation as she looked directly at my brother. "Aiden has been bleeding money for the last two years. His fancy new Mercedes in the garage? Leased on borrowed time. His business ventures? All failing. And worse, he’s been pressuring your parents to alter their will to sign over the house and their remaining assets exclusively to him, claiming I was 'stealing' your inheritance because Jackson is the oldest grandchild."

The room temperature seemed to drop ten degrees.

My mother gasped, clutching her chest, while my father stared at Aiden in stunned disbelief. "Aiden... is that true? You've been tampering with our estate planning?"

Aiden let out a bitter, hysterical laugh, his mask finally slipping completely off. "And what if I have?! You two raised him to be the golden boy lawyer while I got scraps! I needed leverage! If my nephew gets labeled as violent, as unstable, it shifts the entire family dynamic! It proves my family is the 'victim,' it paints me as the sympathetic father, and it makes you feel guilty enough to sign over the deed before you're in the ground!"

The confession hung in the air like poison.

My father slowly stood up from the sofa, his tall frame trembling—not with weakness, but with a deep, volcanic rage that had been building for decades. He looked at Aiden not as a son, but as a stranger who had violated every sacred boundary of family, trust, and basic human decency.
