Chapter 10 - The Aftermath, Justice, and a New Beginning

Three months later, the autumn rains of Oregon gave way to the crisp, bright sunshine of early winter.

The trial of Richard Voss and his criminal syndicate was swift, quiet, and decisive. Armed with the financial records recovered from the lake house and my own detailed testimony under seal, federal prosecutors secured multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole. The corrupt local sheriff was convicted of obstruction and bribery, stripping away the last remnants of Voss’s local protection network.

Daniel’s construction company dissolved under the weight of federal audits and massive civil lawsuits. Vanessa was last seen trying to contest her prenuptial agreement in a Nevada family court, only to discover that Daniel’s accounts had been entirely frozen by asset forfeiture laws. He ended up moving into a small, modest apartment on the outskirts of Portland, working a basic consulting job for a commercial firm—living the exact kind of quiet, ordinary life he once thought was beneath him.

And me?

Emily was back at college in Seattle, pursuing her degree in architecture with a renewed sense of confidence and security. We talked on the phone every Sunday, sharing recipes—real ones this time, without any hidden codes.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter of my Portland home.

I picked it up. It was a message from Mark Rivera at the Bureau: Advisory board meeting in D.C. next month. We have a consulting chair open for elite threat assessment. Think you can handle dusting off the old badge?

I looked around my kitchen. The burned cheese on the baking tray was long gone. The house was quiet, peaceful, and entirely mine.

I smiled, my fingers moving steadily across the screen.

Thanks, Mark, but I’m retired.

Besides, I’ve got a reputation as a pretty good housewife to maintain.

I dropped the phone back onto the counter, poured myself a fresh cup of coffee, and walked out onto the porch to watch the winter sun rise over the mountains—free, untamed, and completely at peace.
