Chapter 6 - CONSEQUENCES

I reached into my briefcase and pulled out a stack of legal documents, placing them heavily on the coffee table right beside the laptop.

"What is this?" Richard asked, his voice shaking as he looked down at the paper.

"That is a formal notice of legal action," I announced, looking around the room. "And these are divorce papers."

Daniel's face went entirely white. "Divorce? Maya, no! Look, this is crazy! Lauren is the one who stole the bracelet! Mom made a mistake! We can fix this!"

"You can't fix this, Daniel," I said. "You showed me exactly who you are when it mattered most. When your three-year-old child needed a father to protect her, you sided with the people who abused her. You are a weak man."

"Maya, please!" Margaret cried out, suddenly standing up. The arrogance she had worn like armor for years was completely gone, replaced by terror. "Don't do this! Don't take Emma away from us! I... I was wrong! I was trying to teach her discipline, I didn't know Lauren—"

"Do not speak my daughter's name," I hissed, turning on Margaret with a ferocity that made the older woman take a step back. "You took scissors to a three-year-old baby's hair to humiliate her. You used physical violation as a tool of power. You are never going to touch her again. You are never going to see her again."

"You can't do that!" Margaret sobbed. "She's my granddaughter!"

"Watch me," I said. "In those papers, my attorney has already filed an emergency petition for sole physical custody and a temporary restraining order against you, Margaret, and against Lauren. If either of you comes within five hundred feet of Emma or her school, you will be arrested."

"And what about the police?" Richard asked, his voice hollow as he stared at his daughter, who was still weeping on the sofa.

I turned my attention back to Lauren. "The police are already involved. Before I came up here, I stopped at the police station downstairs. I filed a formal report for grand larceny regarding the bracelet, and a report for child cruelty regarding what was done to Emma."

Lauren let out a blood-curdling shriek. "You called the cops on me?!"

"You stole a fifteen-thousand-dollar heirloom and framed a baby, Lauren," I said coldly. "Did you really think you were going to walk away from this with an apology?"

Right on cue, two heavy knocks echoed through the front door of the apartment.

The sound felt like a thunderclap in the small room.

Richard slowly walked over to the door and pulled it open. Standing in the hallway were two uniformed officers from the local police department.

"Good afternoon," one of the officers said, looking around the tense room. "We received a call regarding a grand theft report filed by a Mrs. Maya Miller. Is Lauren Miller present?"

Lauren shrank back into the cushions of the sofa, her face pale, tears streaming down her makeup-smeared cheeks. "Mom! Dad! Do something! Don't let them take me!"

Margaret fell back onto the couch, covering her face with her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. Richard simply closed his eyes, bowing his head in complete shame. He didn't say a word to defend his daughter.

The officers walked into the room. "Lauren Miller, please step forward and keep your hands visible."

As the officers moved to secure Lauren and inspect the contents of her handbag—where the gold bracelet was quickly located in the interior pocket—Daniel rushed over to me, grabbing my shoulders.

"Maya, stop this! Please! This will ruin Lauren's life! It will destroy my family!"

May you like

I looked into Daniel's desperate, pleading eyes, feeling nothing but a profound sense of disgust.

"Your family destroyed itself, Daniel," I said, peeling his hands off my shoulders. "I'm just sweeping up the debris."
