Part 2: The Notebook Beneath the Bed

Part 2: The Notebook Beneath the Bed
The nurse looked from me to Amy, then back again.
"Is everything okay?" she asked.
Amy swallowed so hard I could see her throat tremble.
"You shouldn't have gone back there," she whispered.
I didn't answer.
Instead, I placed the faded blue notebook on the small hospital table between us.
Detective Sarah Chen folded her arms.
"Would you like to explain this before I do?"
Amy stared at the notebook as though it had become something alive.
For nearly a minute, nobody spoke.
Then she began crying.
Not the desperate sobs she'd shown everyone since arriving at the hospital.
These tears were different.
These were the tears of someone who knew the truth had finally caught up.
"I never meant..." she whispered.
"Don't," I said quietly.
"Not until you tell me why my daughter was afraid of me."
Her face crumpled.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Detective Chen slowly opened the notebook.
Every page contained dates.
Some were fifteen years old.
Others were only weeks old.
Between them were paragraphs filled with resentment.
About me.
About our parents.
About every birthday where she believed I received more attention.
Every school recital.
Every family vacation.
Every compliment.
Every achievement.
I felt like I was reading the diary of a stranger wearing my sister's face.
One entry caught Detective Chen's attention.
"Sophia loves Nicole the way everyone always loved Nicole. Maybe if Nicole loses something important, she'll finally understand what it feels like."
Another entry chilled the entire room.
"Kevin says she's too soft. He says children need fear before they'll listen."
Detective Chen slowly closed the notebook.
"So Kevin didn't force these ideas on you."
Amy's eyes filled with panic.
"No... but he made everything worse."
The investigation moved quickly after that.
Police searched Amy's home again.
This time they weren't looking for broken furniture.
They were looking for evidence.
Hidden cameras showed Kevin yelling.
But they also showed Amy standing nearby.
Watching.
Doing nothing.
Sometimes even giving instructions.
The changed locks.
The blocked phone calls.
The excuses every night.
None of it had been Kevin acting alone.
Amy had planned nearly every step.
She wanted Sophia to depend on her instead of me.
She convinced herself she was becoming the better mother.
Kevin simply encouraged the fantasy until it became dangerous.
When confronted with the evidence, Kevin refused to speak.
Amy eventually confessed.
She admitted she had lied from the moment the police arrived.
She had hoped Kevin would take all the blame.
Instead, both of them were arrested.
When Detective Chen called to tell me, I felt no satisfaction.
Only grief.
Because the sister I thought I knew had disappeared long before that notebook was ever written.
The hardest battle still waited for us.
Sophia barely spoke.
She startled whenever a door closed too loudly.
She refused to sleep unless every light in the room stayed on.
Some nights she woke screaming without remembering why.
One evening, after another difficult therapy session, she climbed into my lap.
Her tiny fingers traced the necklace I always wore.
"Mommy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Did I do something bad?"
My heart shattered.
I held her so tightly she giggled despite herself.
"No, baby."
"Then why didn't Aunt Amy love me anymore?"
I kissed the top of her head.
"It wasn't because of you."
"Sometimes grown-ups make very broken choices."
"And that's never a child's fault."
She nodded slowly.
Then she whispered something I will never forget.
"I knew you'd come."
May you like
Those four words gave me more strength than I thought I still had.
For the first time since walking through that broken doorway, I believed healing was possible.
