Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The news of Ethan’s termination and Richard’s impending divorce hit the Miller family like a category-five hurricane. Within twenty-four hours, my phone, which had been silent for weeks, began blowing up with text messages and missed calls from Ethan.

I didn't answer. I didn't have the strength, nor did I have the desire. Richard had hired a private security detail to stand outside my oncology ward door, ensuring neither Margaret nor Ethan could gain access to me.

On the fourth day after the confrontation, my oncologist, Dr. Evans, walked into my room with a look of cautious optimism. "Grace, your latest blood panels are showing something interesting. The new targeted immunotherapy regimen we started last week is beginning to show a response. The tumor markers are dropping."

I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for a year. "Are they really?"

"Yes," Dr. Evans smiled. "But medicine is only half the battle. Your stress levels seem to have dropped significantly. Whatever shifted in your personal life, keep doing it. Your body is finally fighting back."

While my body was starting its slow, agonizing battle toward recovery, a war was raging outside. Richard visited me every evening, bringing me fresh broth from my favorite restaurant and updating me on the fallout.

"Ethan tried to show up at the headquarters yesterday," Richard told me, pouring a cup of water for me. "He thought he could rally the board of directors. He forgot that the board answers to me. Security escorted him out in front of his entire staff. And guess who was waiting for him in the lobby?"

"Melissa?" I asked, the name tasting like copper in my mouth.

"Exactly," Richard nodded grimly. "Apparently, the young lady discovered that Ethan's corporate credit cards were deactivated and that he no longer had access to the executive penthouse. From what my assistant tells me, she was yelling at him in the lobby because the lease on the sports car he promised her was under the company name, and it was repossessed yesterday morning."

I couldn't help but feel a grim sense of irony. Ethan had abandoned me because I was sick and "inconvenient," running to a woman who loved him for his wealth and status. Now that the wealth was gone, the foundation of his new romance was already cracking.

"They won't go quietly, Richard," I warned softly. "Margaret knows too many people. She will try to ruin your reputation."

"Let her try," Richard scoffed. "She’s already running to the tabloids, claiming I’ve had a mental breakdown due to the stress of your illness. But my legal team is ten steps ahead. We’ve compiled every text message, every voicemail, and every email she and Ethan exchanged regarding your medical care and their plans to dump you to avoid paying medical bills. If she goes public, we release the files. It will ruin Ethan's chances of ever working in this city again, and it will social-distance Margaret from high society permanently."

Two days later, the pressure grew too much for Ethan. He bypassed the security by pretending to be a medical delivery courier, wearing a scrub top he’d somehow acquired. He burst into my room while Richard was away at a board meeting.

He looked terrible. The polished, perfectly groomed man I had married was gone. His hair was disheveled, his expensive suit was wrinkled, and there were dark circles under his eyes.

"Grace!" he gasped, rushing toward my bed. "Thank God. You have to stop him. You have to talk to my father!"

I pressed the emergency call button next to my pillow immediately, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Get out of here, Ethan."

"Grace, please, listen to me!" He fell to his knees beside the bed, trying to grab my hand, but I pulled it away with what little strength I had. "My mom... she forced my hand! She kept telling me that the stress was going to kill me, that I couldn't handle watching you die! I was scared, Grace! I made a mistake. Melissa means nothing to me, I swear! I love you. We can fix this. Just tell my dad to drop the lawsuit and give me my job back. We can get through your cancer together, just like I promised!"

Looking at him, I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel love. I just felt a profound sense of disgust. He wasn't sorry he had abandoned his sick wife. He was sorry he was poor.

"You didn't care about my life when you were planning a future with Melissa," I said, my voice steady despite my trembling body. "You left me here to die so you wouldn't have to watch. You wanted a real future, Ethan. Well, this is it."

Two burly security guards burst into the room, followed closely by a nurse. Within seconds, Ethan was pinned, his arms forced behind his back as he was dragged away, screaming my name and begging for forgiveness.

As the door slammed shut behind him, I took a deep breath. The cancer was still inside me, but the emotional poison was officially gone.
