Chapter 9 - Trial by Fire

Though the legal battles were over and Julian was safely behind bars, the true test of Dominic and Elena’s new life came in the form of building their future together from the ground up.

In October, exactly one year after Elena had walked through the gates of the estate in her muddy boots, the Hart-Caruso Foundation held its official grand opening gala in downtown Chicago.

The event was attended by city officials, medical leaders, former ironworkers, and community members. What had once been a dark story of crime, paralysis, and mob war had transformed into one of the city’s most celebrated stories of redemption and philanthropy.

Elena stood on the grand stage of the auditorium, wearing an elegant dark green velvet gown. She looked out over the crowd of five hundred people, her eyes catching her mother sitting in the front row, crying tears of joy, and Marcus standing near the back doors in a sharp tux, looking like a proud older brother.

Dominic stood beside her at the podium. He took the microphone, his voice echoing clearly through the speaker system.

“One year ago today,” Dominic said, looking down at Elena with unreserved adoration, “I was sitting in a dark room, waiting to die. I believed the world was a cruel place where only the ruthless survived. But a young woman walked into my life with mud on her boots, anger in her heart, and a refusal to let me surrender.”

The crowd fell silent, listening intently.

“She showed me that true strength isn't about how many men you command or how much money you own,” Dominic continued, his voice tight with deep emotion. “It’s about how many people you lift up when they can’t stand on their own. This foundation is her vision. But my heart... my heart belongs entirely to her.”

Dominic set the microphone down on the podium.

Before the audience could applaud, Dominic slowly stepped back and dropped down onto one knee in front of her.

The crowd gasped in collective delight.

Elena covered her mouth with both hands, her brown eyes overflowing with happy tears.

Dominic pulled a small, black velvet box from his jacket pocket and opened it. Inside sat a magnificent, flawless five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, set in platinum—simple, elegant, and timeless.

“Elena Hart,” Dominic said, his voice echoing through the silent room without the microphone. “You saved my life, you healed my body, and you captured my soul. Will you make me the happiest man in this city and marry me?”

Elena didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes!” she cried out, kneeling right down on the stage with him, uncaring of her velvet gown. “Yes, absolute yes!”

Dominic slipped the ring onto her finger, pulled her into his arms, and lifted her up off the stage as the entire auditorium erupted into a standing ovation that lasted for three full minutes.
