Chapter 7 - The Crucible of Fire

“Take this,” I commanded, placing the firearm into her shaking hands. “You know how to use it. Lock yourself inside the reinforced panic room behind the wine cellar. Take Willa and do NOT open the door for anyone except me or Marco.”
“Vincent, no! Come with us!” she cried, tears flooding her eyes as she scooped Willa out of her crib.

“If I go into the panic room, they will breach the door eventually with explosives,” I said, holding her face in my hands and looking directly into her eyes. “I have to eliminate the threat out here. I love you, Sloan. I’ve always loved you. Now go!”
I kissed her deeply, a desperate, fiercely passionate kiss that carried six months of unsaid apologies and a lifetime of devotion. Then I shoved her toward the hidden doorway in the hallway as footsteps echoed down the marble foyer.
