Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

One evening in late September, exactly one year after Victor had first smelled garlic and butter outside the Hartwell construction site, the city of Boston played host to a quiet, elegant gathering.

There were no flashing cameras, no tabloid reporters, and no armed enforcers standing watch at the doors. Instead, the rooftop garden of the Raldi-Hayes Tower was illuminated by thousands of fairy lights strung through the blooming trellises, overlooking a breathtaking panoramic view of the harbor bathed in the golden hues of sunset.

Only a small circle of trusted individuals attended: Marco Bell, beaming proudly with his fiancée; Dennis Cole and a few senior project managers who had learned the hard way never to cross Victor Raldi; and several close friends Alice had made through the neighborhood bakery community.

At the center of the terrace stood an archway woven with white roses and ivy.

Leo stood proudly at the front in a miniature tuxedo, holding a velvet cushion containing two platinum bands.

When the soft strains of a cello began to play, Alice walked down the candlelit aisle. She wore a simple, elegant ivory dress that caught the evening breeze, her dark brown hair styled in soft waves around her shoulders, her eyes shining with unshed tears of pure joy.

Victor stood waiting by the archway, his charcoal overcoat replaced by a sharp midnight-blue tuxedo, his ice-blue eyes fixed entirely on her as if she were the only moving object in an otherwise still universe.

When she reached him, Victor took her hands in his. His grip was firm, warm, and utterly protective—the very same hands that had once gripped a scarred enforcer’s collar against a concrete wall to defend her honor.

“I never thought I would find anything in this world worth risking an empire for,” Victor said softly, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet terrace for all to hear. “Until the day you handed me a bowl of beef stew and looked at me as if I were simply a hungry man, and nothing more.”

Alice smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek and catching the evening light. “You were just a hungry man, Victor. You just needed someone to remind you how to live.”

“And now,” Victor whispered, sliding the platinum band onto her finger, “my empire belongs to us.”

As they sealed their vows with a tender, unhurried kiss, the city skyline below them sparkled into life with thousands of glowing lights, and Leo cheered louder than anyone else on the terrace.
