Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of an Empire

Within forty-eight hours, the digital footprint of Golden Morning Mama didn't just fade—it vaporized.

When the local news network picked up the police report, detailing not only the physical assault on a six-year-old child but also the leaked audio of Vanessa's threats captured by her own ring light, her corporate sponsors moved with terrifying speed. Organic Oat Milk Co., Eco-Tot Apparel, and Sunny Valley Kitchenware issued simultaneous public statements canceling their contracts and distancing themselves entirely from the brand.

By Tuesday afternoon, Vanessa’s Instagram account had vanished. Whether she deactivated it in a panic or Instagram pulled it down for community guideline violations involving child endangerment, the result was the same: the golden throne of Winslow's Ridge had turned to dust.

My phone finally stopped ringing around midnight on Tuesday.

Ryan and I sat on the back patio, wrapped in woolen blankets, watching the fireflies dance across the damp grass. The night air was crisp, carrying the earthy scent of late summer and approaching autumn.

"My mother called again about an hour ago," Ryan said quietly, staring into the flickering flame of a citronella candle on the table. "She was crying. She said Vanessa is locked in her bedroom, refusing to eat, claiming the whole world is conspiring against her."

I took a slow sip of my tea, feeling the warmth spread through my chest. "Did your mother ask how Lily is doing?"

Ryan was quiet for a long moment. He shook his head slowly. "Not once. Even now... even with the police reports and the audio files... my mother still thinks Vanessa is the victim of a misunderstanding. She asked if we could 'keep the family name out of the local paper' to protect Chloe."

I turned my head to look at him, letting the moonlight catch my face. "And what did you say to her, Ryan?"

He looked up, his eyes steady, clear, and stripped of the blind familial loyalty that had nearly cost us our peace. "I told her that if she ever mentions Vanessa's name in this house again—or if she ever expects us to subject Lily to that toxic environment—she won't have to worry about the family name in the paper, because she won't be seeing us ever again."

A profound wave of relief washed over me. I reached across the small gap between our chairs and slid my hand into his. His fingers gripped mine tightly, as if anchoring himself to the only real, grounded thing left in his world.

"We're going to be okay," I whispered.

"We are," Ryan agreed. "And more importantly... Lily is going to be safe."
