Chapter 9 - Under the Blooming Lilac Arches

The afternoon of June 15th was nothing short of magical.
We kept the celebration intimate and deeply personal—just a small gathering of our closest friends, including Rohit (who was proudly serving as my best man with a huge grin on his face) and a few dear colleagues who had supported us through the darkest days.
The ceremony took place in our backyard, right beneath a magnificent archway woven from blooming purple lilacs that Maya and I had carefully tended over the spring.
As the sun began to dip toward the horizon, casting a golden, ethereal glow across the grass, the soft strains of acoustic guitar music drifted through the air.
I stood at the altar in a tailored navy suit, my heart hammering in my chest with the exact same nervous thrill I had felt five years ago on our first wedding day—only this time, there was no naivety, no unspoken fear, no lurking shadow. Just absolute, hard-earned clarity.
Then, the music shifted.
Maya appeared from the side of the house, walking slowly down the grassy aisle on her own terms, radiant and breathtaking. She wore a simple, elegant ivory sundress embroidered with delicate wildflowers, her dark curls framing a face glowing with pure, unadulterated joy.
As she stepped under the lilac arch and stood before me, I reached out and took her hands. They were warm, steady, and alive.
The celebrant—a warm-hearted older woman from our neighborhood—smiled and began the ceremony. But we didn’t need a long script to know what we were promising each other. When it came time for our vows, Maya looked straight into my eyes, her voice clear and steady.
“Arjun,” she began, a soft smile touching her lips. “Five years ago, we made a promise in a crowded room. But it wasn't until we walked through the fire, until we faced the worst that life could throw at us, that I learned what love truly is. Love isn't the absence of storms. It’s the choice to hold hands when the roof is caving in. Thank you for walking back into my hospital room, and thank you for never letting go.”
Tears blurred my vision, but I kept my voice firm and clear as I spoke my own vows in return.
May you like
“Maya, I walked away once because I was a coward who didn't know how to face the silence,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “I thought love was supposed to be easy. But standing here today, I know that real love is the courage to stay, to listen, and to build something unbreakable out of the broken pieces. I promise to cherish you, to laugh with you, and to never let a single day pass without telling you how much you mean to me. I loved you then, I loved you in the dark, and I will love you for every breath I have left.”
When the celebrant pronounced us husband and wife once more, the applause of our small circle of friends erupted into the evening air. But I didn't hear them. I only felt the warmth of Maya’s lips against mine, sealing a promise forged in fire and anchored in grace.
