Chapter 8 - The Adoption

The Cook County Family Courthouse was unusually quiet on a Friday afternoon.

The sun filtered through tall stained-glass windows, casting warm geometric shapes across the polished wooden pews. Sitting at the defense-turned-petitioner table was my lead family law attorney, Arthur Pendelton, along with myself, Lily, and Owen.

The twins were dressed up for the occasion. Owen wore a tiny navy-blue blazer with matching trousers, looking remarkably like a miniature version of me, while Lily wore a bright yellow dress with white lace trim. Barnaby the bear sat proudly between them on the counsel table, wearing a tiny handmade bowtie Mrs. Gable had sewn for him that morning.

Judge Harold Thomas, a silver-haired man with kind eyes framed by wire-rimmed glasses, sat behind the elevated bench, flipping through a thick stack of adoption and background reports.

"Mr. Steel," Judge Thomas said, his voice echoing softly in the high-ceilinged room. "I've reviewed the home study reports, the psychological evaluations, the financial disclosures, and the reports from the court-appointed guardian ad litem."

I stood up, holding my hands together in front of me. "Thank you, Your Honor."

"I have to admit," the judge continued, setting his pen down. "When this case first came across my desk, I was skeptical. A bachelor billionaire, CEO of a global defense and logistics firm, suddenly petitioning for full legal adoption of twin five-year-olds abandoned at an airport. It sounded... unconventional."

He looked over his glasses directly at me.

"But then I read the field reports. I read about how you stepped up when their world fell apart. I read about the security measures you implemented, the school enrollments, the medical care, and, most importantly, the testimony from their child psychologist."

Judge Thomas turned his gaze toward the twins. "Lily, Owen. Can you stand up for a moment?"

Lily grabbed Owen’s hand, and together they stood beside my legs, looking up at the judge's high bench.

"Do you know why we're here today?" Judge Thomas asked gently.

Lily nodded solemnly. "To make Ryker our official dad."

"And is that what you want?"

Owen looked up at me, his small hand reaching out to wrap around my index finger. "Ryker promises he never leaves us. He helped us fix Barnaby, and he makes bad dreams go away."

Judge Thomas smiled—a warm, genuine expression that erased all the formal stiffness of the courtroom.

"In my thirty years on the family bench," Judge Thomas said, grabbing his wooden gavel, "I have rarely seen a bond formed so quickly and so deeply. Julian Vance was a heroic man, but I have no doubt that he is looking down today with immense gratitude for the man who picked up his children when they were left in the dark."

He struck the sound block with a sharp CLACK.

"The petition for full legal adoption is granted. From this day forward, Lily Vance and Owen Vance shall officially be known as Lily Vance Steel and Owen Vance Steel. Congratulations, Mr. Steel. You are legally their father."

Lily let out a little squeal of joy and jumped into my arms. I lifted her up, wrapping my other arm around Owen, pulling both of them tight against my chest as Marco and Mrs. Gable, sitting in the front row of the gallery, broke into loud applause.

"Thank you, Your Honor," I said, my voice thick with an emotion I hadn't felt in decades.

"Take good care of them, Ryker," the judge said kindly. "They're your greatest responsibility now."

"They're my life," I answered.
