Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary

The private wing of City General Hospital felt less like a medical facility and more like a five-star luxury hotel suite, but with the added reassurance of top-tier cardiac monitors humming softly in the corner. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathed the room in golden afternoon light, looking out over the sprawling skyline of the city.
For the first time since giving birth, my shoulders finally dropped.
A team of nurses had already settled me into an adjustable orthopedic bed with fresh, high-thread-count linens. They checked my stitches, administered my medications with gentle professionalism, and monitored my heart rate while speaking to me in calm, respectful tones that felt like a foreign language after two years with the Whitmores.
Dr. Harrison stood by the bed, reviewing my chart with a small, approving smile. "Your blood pressure is stabilizing, Claire. The echocardiogram shows improvement, but I want absolute bed rest for the next week. No stress, no visitors except your aunt, and zero heavy lifting—other than your daughter, of course."
"Thank you, Doctor," I said, looking down at Lily, who was sleeping peacefully in her clear plastic bassinet beside the bed. "For everything. If you hadn't called my aunt..."
"I didn't like the look in Mr. Whitmore's eyes when he insisted on taking you home against medical advice," Dr. Harrison admitted, adjusting his glasses. "And when I checked hospital records for emergency contacts, I found a notarized directive from Julianna Vance naming her as your legal guardian and family representative, dating back to when your parents passed. I made a phone call. The rest was just justice taking its course."
Julianna walked into the room carrying a tray of steaming herbal tea and a portfolio of legal documents. She dismissed the nurse with a warm smile, set the tray on the bedside table, and pulled up a chair.
"Well," Julianna said, taking my hand in hers. "The federal agents executed the search warrant at Preston's office an hour ago. They found offshore accounts, forged signatures, and enough digital paper trail to keep him and his associates behind bars for the next fifteen years."
I took a slow sip of the tea, letting the warmth spread through my chest. "And Eleanor?"
"Eleanor is currently locked out of her country club account, her credit cards have been frozen by the bank, and the title to that suburban house is currently under foreclosure review by our corporate holdings," Julianna said smoothly, a satisfied glint in her eyes. "She tried to call three different high-society friends for help. None of them answered. When you fall from wealth without grace, people tend to forget your phone number very quickly."

A bittersweet laugh escaped my lips. "It feels like a dream. Or a nightmare that I finally woke up from."
"It's real, Claire," Julianna said gently, squeezing my fingers. "You survived. You brought my beautiful grandniece into the world, and you are free. No more hiding your hospital gown under cheap coats. No more apologizing for breathing. From this moment on, you and Lily are under my protection, and nobody will ever touch you again."
