Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Silence

I drove straight to the nearest emergency room, ignoring the blur of red lights and city traffic. Maya sat curled in a tight ball on the leather seat, staring unblinkingly at her own lap. Every time I reached over to touch her hair, a violent tremor ran through her tiny frame.

At the hospital, the medical team moved quickly. They hooked her up to an IV line to treat her severe dehydration and wrapped her in warmed blankets. I sat beside her bed, holding her weak hand, refusing to leave her side even when the hospital social worker and two police officers knocked on the door.

Detective Miller, a stern woman with tired eyes, sat in the plastic chair opposite us. “Mr. Vance, we sent a patrol unit to your ex-wife's house. Julian claims you broke into his yard, assaulted him, and took your daughter without permission. He says the cage was a dog crate for a rescue animal they recently adopted.”

“He’s lying!” My voice cracked with suppressed rage. “She was inside it! The lock was on the outside! And the pool—you need to drain that pool right now.”

Detective Miller turned her gaze to Maya. Her voice softened. “Maya, sweetie? Can you tell me what happened in the yard? Can you tell me what’s in the pool?”

Maya flinched. She pulled the warm blanket up to her chin, her knuckles turning white. She looked at me with eyes far too old for a ten-year-old child. “If I tell,” she whispered, her voice barely a scratch, “Julian said the bad man under the water will come for Daddy.”

I leaned in, kissing her brow. “Nobody is going to hurt me, Maya. I promise you. You’re safe now.”

Maya swallowed hard, looking between me and the detective. “It wasn’t a dog cage,” she said softly. “Julian locked me in there three days ago because I saw him and Mommy arguing in the kitchen. Mommy was yelling at him about money... and then Mommy stopped yelling. Julian put Mommy in the trash bags. He made me watch from the window before he locked me away.”

The room went dead silent. Detective Miller stood up immediately, her gentle demeanor instantly replaced by cold authority. She pulled out her radio. “Dispatch, I need a dive team and a search warrant at 414 Elm Street immediately. Secure the premises and hold the male occupant.”
